Again our views on Selby differ (probably too much). I don't see Selby's playing style as "systematically taking an overly cautious approach on the table". I see it as a percentage-game, and this is not equal to negative play...the opposite really...very positive in my view. You are playing positive shots and at the same time thinking about all the various possibilities and outcomes, applying a risk ratio. In my book that is very smart play. Higgins played the same game....good hard match play as they called in nowadays.
Well, it's fine in a discussion. Considering the unreal amount of pure gibberish that has been going on in this thread, I have no problems with differing opinions.
I thought the definitions were the same, though, more or less. He's turning down some options if that can lead to options for his opponent. Anatoly Karpov did that in chess on his way to becoming one of the best players ever.
I just think Higgins has always been more committed to no-defensive-aspect-added sort of attacking play over his career, at least more frequently than Selby. Selby, to be fair, does play some shots like that from time to time, albeit with less success from what I see, so, that's why I said "He makes most out of his style".

Regardless, I do agree that's the smart thing. That's also I'm not thoroughly entertained with it, however, since I like when a player plays the silly shots from time to time. That's what made me a Ronnie O'Sullivan fan. That's also why the sport lost some of its appeal to me in the last couple of years, with even Ronnie playing solid match snooker nowadays.
      All the way Mark J!!

                • Why the last session finished so early? Surely there were just enough time for at least one more frame? Really favoured Ronnie, that

Have fun playing 18 frames with 2 mid-session intervals and a slightly larger break of an hour.

Because they had to have at least one hour rest, it would of been too tight

Cheers for that...indeed it's absolutely fine to have different opinions as long as the discussion is civil. So it's all good

And I appreciate your points (of view) above. Think I see now what you mean about John Higgins being a different player from Selby. To a point I agree. But I also still see them as very alike snooker players in terms of the way they approach the game.

Funny thing how opinions can be so different...I see the ROS / Trump style of play as totally the opposite...it's turned me off partly from snooker. I have always said that for me any match needs to be a real contest and tight until the end. And most of the times this can't happen when any one player is so much better than the rest. Ronnie is that (yes I can admit it...its not a hard thing to do really )

Think we have just about covered it have we? Appreciate your candor and open-minded discussion :snooker:
