How many other top athletes don't have a coach or never needed a coach?

Lets face it, he can play. Youngest player to make a competitive 147. But, is he ever going to be the best in the world without a coach?

I heard recently that he lost his parents early. Not sure if this is true, but if it is then maybe he feels that he can do OK all by himself.

My favourite players: Walter Lindrum (AUS), Neil Robertson (AUS), Eddie Charlton (AUS), Robby Foldvari (AUS), Vinnie Calabrese (AUS), Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Dominic Dale and Barry Hawkins.
    I dream of a 147 (but would be happy with a 100)

That says already a lot of him. I for my part think he desperately needs a coach.

I have never known a player who can score and play as well as he does at times to put in so many horrible performances. Comparing him to a top 3 all time player like John nah not good enough to chaulk Johns cue .
I don't think that's the whole truth. I have always found Higgins and Selby very similiar players. They are surely the most complete players out there. Both can score heavily, both have a great safety play and both are tactical masters.
Though I agree that Selby hasn't reached the level of Higgins and of course not his success. But he still has time to add more (world) titles to his resume.

With Selby as with Higgins it is that the opponents have always more pressure, because they know they never can feel safe.

That sums it all I think. Let's face it, when you are in the Top 8, everybody can trash eveybody on a match. The issue is not about technique, cue action, whatever....all these guys are execptionnal at playing the game. The difference between the very good players and the animals like Hendo, Higgo, Ronnie or Selby is the mental. Sometimes, you need to have this extrnal point of view to go back on the right track. Snooker is such a difficult game that it is easy to get dragged down the wrong way without even noticing it. There is no shame in asking help. I'm not a fan of Judd but it would be a shame if he doesn't achieve his potential because of his stubborness and refusal to seek help...I think Luca Brecel has a bit of the same problem, even though he has a good coach in Chris Henry. But shot selection issue for him as well.

I remember his parents were present during his 2011 world cup final, it is not true what you have heard.

Really big shame of Un-Nooh missed max, it was well controlled break for the most parts of it and when he lost position, he played some superb recovery shots.
According to wiki, he has also missed pink on maximum few years back. So next time he will hopefully get one step further and compile the whole break!

Sadly, I am stuck in the work, I can't watch the matches afternoon, but I will be ready for evening action.
Top quarter of the draw seems really interesting now, with Martin Gould perhaps being favourite now, the rest of the quarters seems to still have its biggest name in the tournament.

            • This David Grace fella looks pretty poor. Can't see Ebbo losing this.

Maybe Steve Peter ? (the guy that helped O´Sullivan) could do wonders with Trump. I only saw the last two frames yesterday, but his problem was more than anything mental. The number of relatively easy shots missed and pots left on was amasing, and he had lots of chances to get over the line.

                  Glad to hear that

Was it someone else maybe? Hope not to be honest.

Anyway, can anyone else name a top flight athlete that has never had any coaching?

Although I'm not that great at snooker I understand the psychological side to the game. Personally I would like to be a snooker coach, as I see certain players like Allen and Maguire who have great talent, but have underachieved mainly due to their temperament. Basically guys like that are leaving good money on the table

Only one I can think of that fits that description is Selby, whose mother apparently walked out on the family when he was 8 and has had no real contact since, while his dad died of cancer when he was a teenager. He's been through a lot, so you can understand where the mental strength comes from.

Alex Higgins? Never hard mention of him having a coach.
