One thing irritating about the commentators is anything that's slightly amusing that happens they blow it out of all proportion like its the definition of comedy. Also some of the stories told about the snooker "wags", I'm half expecting to be updated on who's just got a new set of implants.

Is it me, or do the BBC overreact to lower ranked players?

I like the oldskool commentators because they are all great guys and good players in their day but I agree they have definitely been given a new kind of remit which can make their chatter a lot more distracting and often annoying. Sometimes they seem more interested in getting a laugh from a weak gag instead of letting people enjoy the quiet moments while someone is breakbuilding.
During Marco Fu's attempt to keep in the match when he was 5-0 down against Neil Robertson John Virgo and someone else who I can't remember were talking about something and John Virgo saw an opportunity to make a quip he was hoping would get a laugh from the crowd wearing ear pieces. Thankfully nobody did because they realised Marco was on a break and it would be very distracting for him at such a critical phase of the match. I wish the commentators in particular Virgo would think about that a bit more before they try to be the stand up comic. I bet if it had been Ronnie or Robertson at the table he wouldn't have tried to get the laugh because those players are a lot more vocal when they are upset about something. It must annoy players when they are on a break and the crowd start giggling for no reason.

can't remember the event -was it WSC15? - when Robbo went to the booth after the end of his match and ask who made the joke that caused the crowd laugh when he was down on a shot. Willie said it was not him but I'm sure it wasUp the TSF! :snooker:

In my opinion, there should be two types of commentator. The former player, and the journalist.
The former player is there to be an expert on shot selection, and analysis of what is happening at the table. The journalist is the stat-man. His job is to know as much as possible about each player, past and present. His job is not to know what the player is thinking when at the table. That's for the former player to explain.
When you watch the BBC all commentators are former players, and it's quite obvious that none of them watch snooker unless they are paid to. What's the point? You don't need two players explaining their opinion of shots. You need one to do that, and one to provide the knowledge as to who each player is.

i hate the bbc coverage i agree they dont watch snooker throughout the season and its evident, they make it out as if they dont play any other tournaments.
Im sick of hearing "plays golf to a very good standard" or "wheres the cue ball going"
give me mcmanus and or hendry any day of the week.

The BBC has its faults - especially on the commitment front - but I still maintain no one does it better. The backstage stuff, interviews, stats, musical montages, light-hearted stuff etc etc, is what makes the major tournaments so great to watch.
Hand these big ones over to Eurosport or ITV and the game would be dead inside of three years."Kryten, isn't it round about this time of year that your head goes back to the lab for retuning?"
