  • Some injury can help focus you - Joe J won a world title with a bad back Alex Higgins beat a few players with a dodgy ankle - one leg once too I believe hoping round the table he beat someone and he also won Irish masters against Hendry suffering a bit Q Hann played well with a dodgy foot he broke jumping out of a plane. Chris small won a ranking event when he could hardly bend down without being in pain.

However hurt your neck or your cueing arm or catch a cold/flu and you can be stuffed.

My thoughts exactly, Trump was terrible and got beat by somebody a little less terrible on the day - he'll get thumped in the next round for sure.

He'll be the first to admit he doesn't make many century breaks even in practise, but prefers longer formats and scrapping it out @ the Crucible.

Dotty was out to "Get Carter" and he did just that!

          • i was thinking about this and I agree. but you could have an average shot time rule. has to be quicker than 20 or 25 seconds over the course of the match or there is some sanction. I quite agree I'm against the premier league type shot clock.

What about key moments in a world final where you need that extra bit of time but you're watching the clock instead of concentrating on the shot at hand, but you're forced to play the shot and it costs you the title. In most matches actually. I just don't like it. I'm just old school.

              Trump played terribly.

There was also clear vision of Trump wincing in pain and his brother tweeted it was a shoulder injury causing weakness in the arm. I cannot find the two tweets anymore so they seem to have been deleted but they were mentioned on the Eurosport coverage of the match.

How much the later caused the former is impossible for an outsider to know. We don't know when the injury occurred or the seriousness of the injury. It is possible that the injury had very little impact on Trumps play and his reason for playing badly was different to the injury, but it is also possible that he was hampered significantly by the injury and did extremely well just to complete the match even though he lost.

Funny how he only seemed to 'wince' occasionally and wasn't doing it at all until things started to look dodgy - the cynic in me says the only thing actually hurting was his pride and massive ego for getting thumped by a chump. That would make a good headline for a crappy newspaper. Trump thumped by a chump. :biggrin-new:

I just wish World Snooker would set the record straight and introduce a ruling about deliberate slowing of the game. It seems no referee has the knowledge or rules to make a decision and we don't want shot clocks but it does need sorting out.
Until such a rule is introduced, maybe the referee should use his or her discretion if he or she feels that a player is taking an unduly long time to complete his shot and have a quiet word with him.

Shot clocks cannot be the solution. If you think about the pressure the players are under sometimes, shot clocks would only make difficult situations even worse.

Doesn't matter what the real reasons might have been - the main thing is that Trump's been sent packing before he can cause any more trouble.

I think the problem with a referees discretion is that many don't actually play the game. They are not aware of when a player is actually doing it to frustrate his opponent or when a player is simply in a difficult position and is needing a minute or two to think of their options.

World Snooker need to stamp this out though. Its getting to be quite a deliberate attempt by certain players to cheat by taking time knowing its frustrating the opponent. Its always the same players who you know the matches are going to take an age.
