What is wrong with the crowd? Never seen such a quiet crowd, they aren’t applauding any decent shots. Weird.

I've noticed this, too. I've seen some cracking pots and not so much as a murmur from the crowd. They're also strangely subdued during the players' intros, too.

I went to Qualifying stuff at Preston last year and it seemed wrong to applaud etc shots on the tables I was watching....

it's bizarre and i'm sure it's the conditions in the arena's they play in. I played 7 frames on Selby's star table last night using triangle chalk and 1G Aramith champion balls, I had 1 kick although I think this was due to m technique when decelerating on a dead weight blue to the middle. I often play on the star tables in our club and genuinely very rarely get kicks, maybe 1 kick every 10 frames or so on average.

I bet you get more but don't realise it as not every bad contact is a kick. As a young man who has probably only played with aramith PR balls you might not know the difference, but those bad shots you think you played where you miss thick and the cue ball dies somewhat is down to the balls not you.
Get yourself a decent old set of SC's and you'll notice the difference, the noise the balls make on contact for a start, the SC's make a sharper click, the PR's duller clunk sound like every shot is a bad contact, and in comparison they are.
There's a Barry Stark video where he sets up four PR balls into a pyramid that stay together, with SC's that isn't possible due to less surface friction, the more friction the worse the contact between the balls.

Maybe they're respecting the fact that there are four matches on the go and don't want to put off the other players with undue noise, strange behaviour indeed these days I know.

Nah, doesn't make sense, if that were the case they wouldn't clap at all. And it's never stopped anyone clapping at the crucible when there are multiple matches on.

Fair enough if it improves for the later rounds and the final.
