  • Some Crucible trivia

Just looking at some stats and I find the following little nuggets of (purely trivial) info concerning the upcoming World Championship:

    • The second semi-final will (assuming there are no walkovers) be the 7,000th match in World Championship history.

    • We may see the 1,000th Crucible century: the current total is 940, so 60 centuries would be required (not impossible).

    • John Parrott has become the first player to qualify for the Crucible on nine occasions; meanwhile Michael Judge has become the first player to lose in the final qualifying round seven times.

    • If at least two matches reach a decider, we will see the 100th Crucible decider.

    • Stephen Hendry is almost guaranteed to leapfrog Jimmy White to second place in frames played at the Crucible - and could overtake Steve Davis in top spot. Current standings are: Davis 1,570, White 1,558, Hendry 1,545 followed by Parrott 1,068 and Griffiths 999.

    • Stephen Hendry could become the first player to earn £2million at the Crucible alone. He is currently on £1,969,878 and twelve pence. Also, Mark Williams could become the third player to earn over £1million at the Crucible. He's currently on £984,050. Above him are Ronnie O'Sullivan (£1,277,600) and Hendry.

    • Judd Trump could become the youngest player ever to win a match at the Crucible, at 17 and 245 days. No other 17-year-old has won a match at Sheffield.

    • If Steve Davis wins 21 frames he will be the fifth player to win 1,000 World Championship frames, after Fred Davis (1,878), John Pulman (1,178), Walter Donaldson (1,133) and Stephen Hendry (currently 1,002).

    • Saturday 28 April will be the 500th day of play at the Crucible.

      .
This almost makes me want somebody to withdraw so that the final can have the added prestige of being the big 7000. (Please note that almost here is supposed to be read as an extreme exageration)

When was the last time 60 was achieved though?

Assuming that Griffiths doesn't come out of retirement who is best placed to be the next to break 1000? I would guess Doherty or Ebdon. Any candidates this year for the milestone?

Has the prize money been released yet? I would have thought Mark will break 7 figures just for turning up. If not though how many players are in with a shot of reaching the magic one mil? I would guess the winner is getting around 250,000 this year so (without considering maximums anyone on 800,000 or more has a chance)

I'm guessing bar Jimmy and Parrott nobody else could be close t this milestone from the current crop of players as at 70/71 frames being the maximum one can win in a single year, 1000 frames will take a minimum of 15 years to compile (and that's if you are world champion each time).

If its taken Hendry and Davis over 20 years to achieve then a non total domination player would need 30. Hence I would be surprised if anyone other than Parrott from this yrears last 32 is even near 700.

        In response to your questions:
When was the last time 60 was achieved though?
63 in 2005 (the record of 68 in 2002 is the only other 60+).
Assuming that Griffiths doesn't come out of retirement who is best placed to be the next to break 1000? I would guess Doherty or Ebdon. Any candidates this year for the milestone?
Next are O'Sullivan on 877 (level with Thorburn, followed by Dennis Taylor on 830), Doherty on 826 and Ebdon on 815.

O'Sullivan could statistically do it this year but he would need to reach the final and all five of his matches be close (a la Doherty in 2003)

Top prize this year is £220,000, £20,000 up on last year. On last year's figures the second-round losers' prize of £12,680 would be just insufficient for Williams, though it only needs to rise by £3,270.

Next on the list are White (£956,025), Davis S. (£809,130), Ebdon (£763,450), Doherty (£734,400), Higgins J. (£725,300) and Stevens M. (£618,880). Parrott is the only other player over £½m.
I'm guessing bar Jimmy and Parrott nobody else could be close to this milestone from the current crop of players [1,000 World Championship frames won] as at 70/71 frames being the maximum one can win in a single year, 1000 frames will take a minimum of 15 years to compile (and that's if you are world champion each time). If its taken Hendry and Davis over 20 years to achieve then a non total domination player would need 30. Jimmy White is on 901, Parrott on 682 and O'Sullivan on 604. They are the next of the current crop to manage it. White would be able to do it in one year from the 4th qualifying round back.[quote]

Sorry to keep the questions coming and I know the answers are freely available but with regard to the number of frames won stat, surely Drago must have played a fair few as he started qualifying for the crucible before Jimmy.

Here is the complete list of those who have won at least 100 World Championship frames:

It includes all World Championship matches, including pre-Crucible years and rounds, up to the end of the 2007 qualifiers.

Thanks Statman. I always find it interesting how even the best players never seem to win that many more than 50% of their frames in the long run... from a very quick glance at that list (and I may have missed someone), I saw only Joe Davis recording success above 60%.

The percentages of OI'Sullivan and Hendry at 59+ are outstanding.

I have 1 question. In terms of money won, is this prize money only, or have you included highest break prizes and bonuses for 147s?

I've booked my holidays today and I think I may well be able to watch the whole tournament. It makes me wish I'd booked a season ticket as I could easily have done that, but hey, you live and learn.

Indeed - although I'd probably view Steve Davis's percentage, at just 0.5% below O'Sullivan's, to be the more impressive, as it included so many years playing beyond his peak, when his percentage surely declined. The Statman, is it easy to see from your spreadsheets what his percentage would have been if it were calculated only up to, say, 1990?

Not easy if qualifying rounds are included. But of course he only needed to qualify in '79 and '80.

His Crucible record from 1979 to 1990 - which is surely comparable - is played 1033, won 647, lost 386, percentage 62.63%.

                            Hendry's 1986-2000 is 1164, 711, 453, 61.08%.

                            O'Sullivan's to date is 877, 504, 373, 57.47%.

It is all money earned at the Crucible - including highest breaks and maximum bonuses.
