Hopefully - he will play without any fear in the final session. It does show how hard it is for debutants - I think Trump may have problems also...

PAULTHESOAVE,
I know exactly where you are coming from, snooker is played in the mind when we are talking of players at this level.
Looking back over the match so far, it is hard to find a frame where he did not have an opportunity but blew it, and for him they were shots of little difficulty. As in the masters he is making Ronnie look very good. Not that Ronnie needs much help in that department.
Confidence is king at the highest level, to be destroyed not by Ronnie but his own frailities I think is a worry.
Like everyone I hope he can move on, but your point is a good one and my biggest concern is I see no mental Hendry like strength, something you will need if you are to become a true great.
The age thing is not an excuse to fall back on, as his apprenticeship is ,or should be over.
His body language is all wrong and conveys the wrong message, a smile now and again could well release a little tension.
At the moment it is almost little boy lost, with a sulk.

It' s very worrying for Ding that he is afraid of playing the best he can certainly against Osullivan, afraid to lose at his best against Ronnie. Now it can still be said that Ding had an off day and wasn't beaten playing at his best. What an attitude problem. He better grow up.I saw that going differently in my mind

It´s certainly a mental thing. He needs some coaching to realise, that in the first tournament of the season, he actually beat O' Sullivan from 3 behind, so he can do it. But from what I can read and what I saw at the chinese open, he is totally out of confidence at the moment.....its not called potting its called snooker. Quote: WildJONESEYE

And, a bit out of thread, but the same goes for Dott: he was all the time sending clear messages to Ian McCulloch and the audience that the whole thing was creeping under his skin, and he looked desperate, and I had this feeling (just a feeling ...) that this was turning Ian on! Ian was'nt playing well, be he was actually playing to win.Proud winner of the 2008 Bahrain Championship Lucky Dip

I think it's way too soon to say that Ding's carreer is over, but threads like these seem to pop up as soon as a player gets on a bad roll. I suppose it's understandable. Ding now has a good three months to take some time off, enjoy the spring and to rebuild his own confidence. The season is hectic, especially with the China Open and the Worlds being so close, so now is about the time for his coach to be telling him that he hasn't just lost this season, though it might feel like that. With some time between the last few tournaments and the next one he should be able to re-focus himself. I hope!
@moondan: I agree that his apprenticeship is over now. He'll have to adjust to the big bad snooker world and fast. I think he will, with the proper help. Seems that ROS has taken it upon himself to help him, something I find rather endearing.Das war ein FLUKE! Ein Glückstreffer!

The one thing which sets him aside from UK players is that over 300 million of the Chinese population are not only waiting for him to win but are expecting him to do so.This is some pressure for a youngster to deal with, in addition to the normal pressures all players have.It really will be how well he is managed as to how far he goes.

I believe Ding needs some mental coaching more than anything. His career is only just beginning, but the pressure on the lad is already so high it's as if he already won 3 world championships and 10 rankers. Pressure like that can even affect the likes of Higgins, Hendry, Ebdon and other mentally strong players. I still predict Ding will be great in the future, but he needs time to develop and mature."I'll be back next year." --Jimmy White

Hopefully he'll be ok after the summer break.
He also won't have to play any qualifiers at all next season so he'll have easier draws in the early rounds and will be a lot fresher when it comes to the Worlds.
After the amazing start that he's had to his career, there was bound to be a bit of a levelling off and now we are seeing it. All these experiences will stand him in good stead for the future though....
Agree with the comments about Ding's mental state though. I think he needs to relax a bit more and smile a bit as it looks like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders when he's out there.

First you have to remember that this season he has entered almost every tournament from a qualifying round, thus having to play seeded players in the first round. He is provisonally ranked Number 7 in the world (pretty good considering he is 20 and his career is over ) so next year will enter the tournaments seeded, and will have easier players to play, and not have to worry about playing a number of qualifying matches just to get there. He has alot of pressure on him, he came to the Crucible for the first time against argueably the most talented player in the world and was expected by millions of Chinese people to have won.
Before the draw was made he was the bookies 2nd favourite to win, the bookies are rarely wrong, unluckily for him he was drawn Ronnie. You play a long slow deadweight red to a corner pocket. As it approaches the pocket, a kamikaze woodlouse crawls out from under the cushion and makes its way across the table, conflicting with the path of the red precisely at the point the red gets there. The red, needless to say, veers off course, and the future of the woodlouse is uncertain. - The Statman
