That is basically what I am doing, but the downloaded file is not watchable. A bit of black, then some video with some more-or-less synced audio, some more nothingness etc etc What could be wrong?

I'm not sure either. I've used HiDownload to record both BBC and Eurosport streams before and the quality's been absolutely fine.
