  • Hardest route to the WC Final

Just been thinking about who has won the WC.

Does anyone (Statman?) know the combined ranking of all the opponents that the winner would have faced through to the final.

This would give you an idea of how easy/hard the draw has been from year to year.

Also, this could be done as well by looking at the number of world titles held by each opponent.

Thanks if you can help. Dan.

On paper and titles wise, i think Davis 81 was the most impressive. I belive it involved White, Thorburn, Griffiths, Higgins then a slight let off in Doug Mountjoy (although he beat Reardon in the semis i think). That's 3 titles and the best up and comer around at that time. Erm, Greame Dott got through an overall 4 titles, although one was John Parrot and two were O'Sullivan.

My opinion, 99 Hendry. I think it was Hunter, Wattana, Stevens, O'Sullivan then Williams(who beat Higgins in the semis), and he was never really in trouble against any of them. Although they hadn't won the worlds yet, they were at least established stars or the best of the young breed.

If Ronnie wins this year it will be a tough one! Ding-Robertson-Higgins-probably Maguire, probably Ebdon!

Murphy beat 3 world champions and Stevens when he won his title.
Dott also beat 3 world champions when he won his.

        That's fairly impressive I'd think.

One of those Murphy beat was Steve Davis and he beat him quite easily - titles are about the past and not necessarily reflecting the quality of the player at the moment.
I saw that going differently in my mind
