Telegraph - Error on First Crucible century

Did anyone else read this? Making reference to the 1,000 Crucible century, it quoted Thorburn as making the first in 1977, a 111 break against Chris Ross.

That game was actually pre-Crucible, in the qualifying competition. Ross, the 1976 English Amateur Champion, never played in the Crucible stages.

Eddie Charlton made the first Crucible century, a 105 against David Taylor.

Who is that Saj Chowdhury they have writing for their website ? I'm sure 99% of the members on this forum know more about the game and its players, and talk rather less out of their nether regions than he does...

well done Cyril. my dad is the Chris Ross in question, and he noticed their bodgeup as well. He seems to remember the break being made in Blackpool.

I suspect your dad, one of the great amateurs of his time, is one of those for whom the pro game kicked off just a tad to late? Really nice to hear such a reply though.

And your dad must have been a high quality player, the amatuer ranks were full of tough opposition, working mens clubs were rife in those days, mostly throughout England and Wales and it is a fallacy to think as some do that there was no strength and depth to the game until recent years.
It just got more easy to become pro, the competition has always been tough.
