I was just thinking to myself and it just feels so strange to think he was runner up at the worlds. At the time I thought nothing of it but now looking back I can't quite believe it when you look at the previous finalists.

Its late so it may just be down to that but looking back what does everyone think?

Every now and again there is a run of surprise World finalists, in the 80's we had Taylor Johnson, Johnson, Griffiths which at that time were far from the big names of the draw (despite a couple winning the final as well)

then After the Jimmy Years, We had Bond, Ebdon, Doherty are become suprise finalists and in one case Champion before things returned to normal with Higginses and Sullivans etc contesting finals.

(I will stress here that I believe Ebdon and DOherty only reached their top potential after reaching the final. Espeically in the case of Ebdon you would have expected White, McManus, Wattana and a few more to reach a final before Ebdon did.)

Now we have the same situation with Dott, Murphy, Lee, Selby. It's a transition period. SOme of the before mentioned players have since justified that final appearance (Murphy, Dott) and other players are still a few years from being Final material in the 'should be best in the world sense' like Cope, Trump, Allen, Robertson (although he is pretty much there now) and maybe Selby too.

I dont think its strange atall, or in anyway a "freak" or "fluke" result. I know you didnt say that, but it seems that may have been what you were implying ?

Selby has been a 'promising' player of note for some time, and it seemed inevitable he would fulfill this promise and make a major breakthrough sooner or later. I first really noticed him in his first round match against John Higgins in the w/c a couple of years ago. It seemed then that he was a big talent, and well worth watching.

He is definately worthy of his top 16 place. Though only time will tell if he will become a regular finalist and title winner.

I wasn't too suprised either. After beating John Higgins in last year's world and giving Mark Williams a good game, I always thought of him as a good player. I did fully expect him to beat Stephen Lee in the first round and after looking like he wouldn't, he did so. He looked very good under pressure and his break building and long game were both of a very high standard. Not sure whether he can keep the consistency as no one seems to be dominating at the moment, but he has certainly earned his place in the top 16.

            He Did Play Well

Selby to be honest was probably shocked himself at getting to the final.

I met him later that night, and he seemed happy.

He played good snooker all the way through the tournament, but don't think many people at all before the tournament would have said he got would have gotten to the final.

He played well all tournament, and held his composure very well when the pressure would have been on him big style.

He is definately one for the future.

I'm still amazed at his technique when everyone keeps telling u to keep your head still when u're down at the shot but "Amazing Selby" keeps moving his head if not all his body from side to side it's incredible really but it seems to work for him just fine
