That´s the way it was last year as well. The players placed 2- 5 will advance to next group, where three new players steps in. So the sooner you start the better chances you get to advance to the finishing rounds. As I remember it, Mark Williams played in four or five rounds last year before he was sent out of the tournament.

The format of this competition seems ridiculous to me. Over the last two years Joe Perry has earned over £48k and hasn't even won it. What sense is there in a tournament that rewards losing?
I often use large words I don't really understand in an attempt to appear more photosynthesis.

It rewards playing, winning frames and scoring. What's wrong with that? The players like it as it provides high quality paid practice against the best. Those who played in it on the 2 last years all said it had helped sharpen their game in the second half of the season. They know the format and if they don't like it, nobody forces them to enter ... but enter they do.
And the bookies like it

I totally agree... I think it's done players like Ali Carter, Joe Perry & Judd Trump the world of good :snooker: Their match play has tremendously improved over the last season or two & It's gotta be at least partly due to competing in the Championship League

So the business plan then is to make sure one gets at least 5th place (4th is better, additional prize money for play-offs), and to win the group stage at the latest possible . Most of practice experience gained that way too.
Say Selby, Trump or Carter could pocket ~£3,000 in every 2 days this week, they seem quite in form for top4-5 again. Not that I'm suggesting that they would be losing group final on purpose . And one earns winning 1 stage in the torunament more than here in 1 week, I guess. (So then this league matters more for those who are not that likelly to go far in the torunaments - both experience & money wise).
Group 1 earnings (according to global snooker website; those in blue advanced to the next group):
(Group position / Player / Group stage £ / Play-offs £ / Total £)
1 Judd Trump ...... £1,500 + £1,300 = £2,800 2 Allister Carter ... £1,400 + £1,600 = £3,000
3 Stephen Maguire £1,400 + £4,800 = £6,200 (won the final) 4 Mark Selby ....... £1,400 + £2,900 = £4,300 5 John Higgins .... £1,300
6 Shaun Murphy .... £800
7 Ryan Day .......... £700
Should be a very attractive tournament for bookies, indeed. So unpredictable. But then are many people following it / betting?

I'm not sure about betting but as a matter of fact betting sites are streaming it and that's the only way to watch it. So I guess if they do it, it means they think it's profitable.
