But I wonder WHY does it take SO long for this 'much-improved service' to be relaunched?....

Obviously, I must be more impatient than Mr. Hearn....

Because they're working with a well known sports stats company (this was announced at the Crucible this year) and it takes time to put an entirely new system, equipment, software etc in place.

Meanwhile we have all the latest results on global snooker including the frame scores - although the first round isn't reffed and we're relying on the players to fill their sheets in properly!

Thanks for that Janie but there still seems a very long time especially since the announcement was made at the Crucible, two months ago!....

I don't mean to keep criticising, but now, no live scoring at all. It disastrous. To make matters even more of a joke, the screens that keep the scores at the venue have also gone down, thus making Janie's job almost impossible.

I thought this was one area Hearn would of got sorted by now. Bloody L, how much time does it take to sort these problems out, he;s had over 6 months. After all it is 2010. What the hell is the problem 'Houston'. I'm pretty sure we have had men on the moon before and world snooker cannot even fix live scoring.

What a deplorable, embarassing fiasco world snooker portray to the rest of the sporting world. I just cannot believe Hearn would let this continue. This has caused problems for a few seasons now, and if Hearn cannot fix it, 'I know a man who can'.

For Christ sake Hearn, get your act together lad. Its know good you sorting all this and that, getting yourself nice and secure and comfy, when you cannot even get the basics right. Don't run before you can walk is the normal saying, but in your case it should be, 'don't walk before you can crawl'!!!!!

I write and develop live scoring systems for a living. current we do the golf which is probably the trickiest sport of them all to score and distribute.
If they require our services then we would be more than happy to help them out

I am a web developer & network engineer and all I can say is someone should pull their finger out as it really isn't rocket science to get a live scoring system working on a reliable basis.

There are 3 possible areas of error.

              Input of the data (source)
              transport (the bit inbetween)
rendering (what you see on your web page)

Input ideally should be done by an official scorer into a tablet or pc or specialized snooker input unit (albeit the latter is an unnecessary expense!)

Transport should be able to handle all the input streams being used and should ideally have wired and wifi connections (in case of a fault with one of them)

Rendering should be done through a server or servers in the latter plural case this would be best managed through a peer to peer system as this will reduce the stress on each individual server. Redundancy (re-routing) should be included should one of the peers encounter a problem.

              Here ended live scoring 101.

Both Excellent replies. Exactly as i thought. So what is the problem then. I know they are supposed to be upgrading or having a new system, but why this time scale involved.

I think i will ask ferret to pose these questions and solutions to Barry Hearn.

Ferret, any chance you can forward this to Barry Hearn and world snooker for us. would appreciate his reply!

I would imagine the company tasked with the solution will be trying to eek as much out of the deal as possible thus either making it over complicated and prone to failure or they are trying to maximise profits by using inferior equipment or software.

                  Unfortunately not an uncommon scenario....

They should just take the live scoring option down on that site, because its a waste of time. Its not working 99% of the time. Wasters.

They have done that already because in Barry Hearns mind it was a embarrassment. When it is up very soon it will be working, however i don't see the point rushing back with some second rate system that brakes down its better to take their time test it with the up coming events before its put on to the site and inflicted on us.

You still doing the scores tho Janie, yes. Even if you have to run around and catch the players or one of the 4 spectators in there!
