Steve Davis 4-1 Ken Doherty
(114) 139-7, 15-73 (69), (89) 90-4, (47,46) 93-5, (35, 37) 93-24
"This was a massive match for both players as a defeat would eliminate them from the competition and end their chances of reaching next week's play-offs, which will be held in Wythenshawe, Manchester.
Once again, the Betfred Premier League Snooker has captured the general public's imagination with the tenth round of action being played out in front of a packed crowd at the SECC in Aberdeen, Scotland.
A foul from Doherty saw Davis (pictured right) come to the table and he made 21 before he lost position and was forced to play safe. However, he was soon back in action when an excellent long-range plant saw him leave the reds well placed to make it 1-0.
He took the chance in fine style as a break of 114, the second highest in this year's competition, gave him an early lead to keep himself in the running of making the next phase.
Doherty loooked to quickly level the match and a break of 69 in the second left Davis needing a snooker. The Nugget refused to give up and a lengthy safety exchange followed but when the Englishman failed to connect with a red and pocketed the cue ball, he conceded the frame to make the encounter 1-1.
There was a nervy start to the third as, with the reds well spread out, both men were anxious to avoid a mistake that would have surely been punished.
When Doherty missed a long red that enabled a focused Davis, who was playing some of his best snooker seen this year, to regain the lead as a run of 89 helped him to a 2-1 advantage.
Doherty failed to sink another red at the start of the fourth but Davis underhit the cue ball while potting a yellow with his score on 47 and that gave kept the Irishman's hopes of a victory alive.
The nerves of the occasion appeared to be affecting Doherty and another error was punished totally as Davis this time managed a break of 46 to leave himself only one frame away from victory.
Another mistake-filled frame from Doherty proved costly as four missed shots at reds ended the Irishman's competition. Breaks of 35 and 37 saw Davis record a 93-24 success in the fifth to move 4-1 ahead, although he still needed to win the last to guarantee his place in the play-offs."
