Yeah, I remember that, April! This was the most bizarre situation. He was no. 15 in the world but due to Ding being defending champion and Murphy being world champion and both of them being outside the top 16 at the time, Davis had to play a qualifying round. I guess that's about as ironic as it can be.
And to add injury to irony, if memory serves, the person who went through due to Davis's no-show was Ricky Walden, who had also gone through against Davis in the China Open the previous year when Davis had been forced to withdraw mid-match suffering suspected concussion, after having banged his head on a doorframe while being mobbed by fans.
"If anybody can knock these three balls in, this man can." David Taylor, 11 January 1982, as Steve Davis prepared to pot the blue, in making the first 147 break on television.
Well done Jimmy! So, could this be his Crucible year?

Jimmy vs. Davis in the final? going to get me tickets to that one!
Now that match would draw in the crowds...

Parrott just levelled from 51-7 down to take Trump to a decider.
Go on JP! Let's hope he turns up trumps.

Thanks for adding this interesting detail. I bet Davis doesn't like playing Walden fearing to break a leg or some other awful things. What a bogey opponent!
