  • China Open 2009 - semi-final discussion!

    07.30
    SF1 – Peter Ebdon v Stuart Pettman
    12.30
    SF2 – John Higgins v Ryan Day

Eurosport are showing both matches in full, which is quite unusual on a Saturday, guess it's a slow sports weekend.

Great news for us fans though!

Well the bottom half of the draw looks stronger even with the number 1 and 3 seeds out:
John Higgins has got to be the favourite for the tournament however if Ryan Day played like he did today, there might be a chance for him tomorrow and on sunday. I don't think he'll get past John though: he's just too strong with his A and B games and ryan is pretty inconsistant.

The top half of the draw is a lot more open. I think it just depends on how they both play. If Stuart plays really well and just goes for it full-throttle he's got a good chance, but if he bottles it he's in trouble. Then again Stuart didn't show many signs of bottling it today. Peter Ebdon regained his form against Hendry today I think he'll be confident enough and he obviously has the experience to take him to the final (and win?)

But then they are not showing any of the final.

Ebdon hardly missed a ball today. If he plays like that, he's a strong favourite for the title. But you just never know with the older players, especially Ebdon likes to follow a good performance with a bad one. I'm not ruling out Pettman this time but I think it's going to be Ebdon.

Higgins-Day is tougher to call. Higgins won the Grand Prix final against Day this season but he lost twice to Day last season. Day doesn't seem to have a problem with winning the SFs and I imagine he's playing better than Higgins. I do expect Higgins to raise his game though.

2 very interesting semi-finals to look forward to & anyone of the four could win on Sunday.
Ebdon really looks up for it this week & Pettman will be up against it he's done so well to get this far anythings a bonus from this point on. Higgins seems to usually bring the best of Day in some of there more recent meetings, & with the way both have been playing i have a feeling this is going to be a close match but with Higgins coming out just on top.

Pettman on a break of 34 in this third frame but has just missed the pink. Ebdon carrying on from where he left off yesterday.

Pettman takes the 3rd frame to trail 2-1.

Pettman to me looks like he is full of confidence. Playing shots all around the table and landing good position.

Yes he was hitting the ball with great authority it that third frame that he won. Come on Stuart!

I'm very happy to see Peter in a semi-final!!! and he looks good, leading 3-0 at the moment.

He has been very consistent indeed. This sort of form just a couple of weeks before the WSC may indicate he's going to be a threat in there.

So Ebdon wins 6-1 & played some impressive stuff at times as he did in his quarter-final against Hendry. Will take some stopping now!

It's a shame that this mediocre performance from Pettman today was probably his only match most of us have seen this week. Well done to him for the best result of his career.

Ebdon was solid again, I think we're guaranteed a good final.
