  • Does anyone Know?

The details of the format of the Grand prix? I know it's a round robin affair with 8 groups of 6 of which the top two will qualify for the last 16 but does anyone know how many frames these round robin matches will be over?

I hope its not something absurd like best of 5 or 7

I read something like that on the world snooker web site. I think a round robin would be a bad idea or an idea that should be used in a non ranking event. The round robin defeats the magic of tournament tree play where anything can happen whereas a round robin will probably mean a huge reduce of shock qualifiers

I strongly disagree with such a format! It would be a stupid idea IMO that would lead to a boring tournament!

Well it would appear that it's definitely going ahead, looking at the World Snooker's breakdown of the ranking point tariffs for the season.

Haven't got the link here off hand, but I will add it here.

8 groups of 6 players, ie last 48, best of 5 frames, I assume top 2 to make it a last 16 knockout.

Having said that, the last 48 would normally be ONE best-of-NINE match, whereas now it is FIVE best-of-FIVE matches.

So actually you are playing a minimum of 15 frames in that round, up to 25 frames, just that you won't have the same opponent for every frame.

                Will be interesting though!

I think it's a great idea to have in at least one tournament per season. It will lead to more attacking and entertaining matchplay, especally in the first matches. The IPT uses it with great result.

Looking at the points schedule, it appears like it will be like this:

                    * Round 1 (ranks 33-96) with eight groups, eight players in each group, top two to progress

                    * Round 2 (top 32 meets the best 16 from Round 1) with eight groups, six players in each group, top two to progress,

So its round robin in the qualifiers as well, will give the new pro's some good experience and give them a chance to get used to the conditions etc
