I fancy Ryan Day as an outside bet for this. He did well to
reach the Quarter Finals of The Northern Ireland Trophy and
he is my bet for a shock. Other than than that i would have
to say Ronnie O Sullivan as i expect him to get through the
group without to many problems
I think the format is a shambles that makes a mockery of the ranking list.
How is a best of five a proper test in a tournament carrying ranking points?
But it isn't a best-of-five match, it is five best-of-five matches.
So the player has a minimum of 15 frames to play in the time he would have been playing a MAXIMUM of 9 – just that he will not have the same opponent each frame.
So unlike the best-of-9, where if you lose you're out of the competition, if you lose the best-of-5 you still have plenty of opportunity to make up for it in other matches.
I think it's a good idea to try it out; if it's seen as a success then fantastic; if it's not then at least it's been tried.

Though, in a tough group, situation when 3 or even 4 players in the group might have 3 wins and 2 losses is not impossible.
and they'll probably have to determine winners by frame difference,
then it's not just every match - every frame counts...
I guess it is technically possible that 5 out of the 6 are tied in top position on 3 wins and 2 losses:
3-2
3-2
3-2
3-2
3-2
0-5
or equally joint second on 2-3 (with the winner on 5-0), which is important in that the top two go through, so a tiebreak would have to be carried out for second place.
If this is anything like football then it would go:
Points (Games won)
Frame difference
Frames won (as in an agregate of 12 frames to 6 is better than 11 to 5)
Head to head result. (If two players have the same figures then how they did against each other is considered.)
However one may argue that head to head should take precidence over total frames as it would look odd to finish behind a guy whom you beat.
Is there no guide to this available yet? You would have thought at least the players would like to know what they need to do to qualify.
Looking at Judd's recent results in the Pontins Series (or whatever its called) I reckon he could finally make an impact in a tournament. I also think maybe the pressure on im last season to do well is off and will be much more experienced. Plus his qualifying group isnt too taxing and I can see him and Dermot McGlinchey qualifying.
