he is young, and he still has petoential. that's all you can say really. he's the only one "aged" to achieve greater things than hendry, to dominate snooker. i am not saying he will, just saying he is right now the only one that is possible. about the frustration thing, i think he's just being childish as he's won 3 tournaments now. somehow, inside, he used to the fact that he's a star now, whereas before, he had no right to show anything. as for the masters, he's rightly awarded wildcards because he's won tounaments. you can't left out a champion out of the MOST prestigious invitational event. for his first wildcard, he beat joe perry with 2 centuries, 3 70s in his first tv appearance, which actually approved it's a right decision.

You dont see Jamie Jones, Judd Trump, Jamie Cope, Ben Woolaston, Mark Allen, and Andrew Norman using that excuse do you.
Just please learn to accept the fact that Ding is a good not great player.
He has won 3 titles but still has a lot to learn about the game, hell even Steve Davis still has things to learn in the game, and he will tell you that himself!
The mere fact that he has won 3 titles, should in theory give him a better chance, as he has dealt with the pressures of being in a major final which can be quite hard to deal with.
And as for his recent temper, well thats called being a teenager, I do it, everyone does.
Ive said it before, and I'll say it again, Ding is by far the most over-rated player in the world, if he can beat Ebdon 5-0, Doherty 6-0, and Hendry 9-4 when he is younger than he is now, dont use his age as an excuse for losing 3-2 for the lesser expirianced Andrew Norman, as I seem to remember Ding pointlessly being awarded 2 Masters invites, he can cope with pressure, age hasnt affected any of them, only not being as good as he is made out to be has made you react like this!
Or why should I say promising, come on, the guy has won 3 titles before his 20th birthday, he has climed to no 5 in the world in three (!) seasons. He has it all: potting, pace, safety game, (mostly) very good temper, that guy has Champion written all over him. If he's merely a good player, then surely most of the others pros must be described as medicore at best.
The fact that he has yet to raise his B-game so to say does not take anything away from him. He's only 19 years old, for christs sake! Of course age is one parametre to take into consideration, having won tournamnets does not change everything in the world.
So how can you say that he has "pointlessly" being awarded invites to the Masters? If there are to be invitations, who would be more deserved of an invitation? Jimmy White??
I know I'm stepping on a mined field here, but is there some sour grapes because he has won just as many titles as Alan McManus, despite Alan has been on the tour for 13 more years...?

Not at all Hege, I can say that Alan at his best, wouldnt compare to Ding at his, but I think he is over rated, its an opinion and to be fair, I hope to be proved wrong, but that will only be when he wins say 8 ranking events.
As for the wild cards, Jimmy is by no means a good choice for one.
if it was up to me, Dominic Dale should have had one, for reaching 2 semi's in 4 tournaments.
And also, Ding OR Trump OR Allen.
But personally to say Ding is the new Hendry or Davis is luadacris, and we shall just have to see who is right, me or the world.1994 a good year
The Masters a great event
The Final a marvellous match
The Winner a snooker genius
Alan McManus The Winner
Stephen Hendry The Loser
1994 a good year....

I wouldn’t say he’s the most over-rated player considering what he has achieved so far. Compared with other player of similar age he’s by far the best player and achiever. We all know that he can cope with pressure. The NIT final against Ronnie is a typical example. Everyone agrees that he still has lots to learn and he will be a great player in the future. I am actually more disappointed by the way he gave up the match against Joe Perry after losing the first frame than his 2-3 defeat by Andrew Norman who later won the group. He also needs to improve his consistency.2006 Premier League Prediction Contest Winner

I don’t think he’ll be the new ‘Hendry’ and ‘Davis’ either simply because there is now so much competition with rising stars like Jamie Cope, Judd Trump, etc. I think Ding is going through a dangerous phase in his career. Because he’s now a ‘top dog’, every defeat will be criticised and scrutinised. It’s easy to come in to a match as a underdog and win it, it’s much more difficult to win a match that you’re expected to win (let’s be honest, he will be consider as the favourite in most matches that he’ll play in the future). This is a different kind of pressure that he needs to learn to cope.2006 Premier League Prediction Contest Winner

Appreciate your comment very much Hege, your thoughts seem rather mature in considering your age, and you definitely know snooker well also.
In fact one thing I feel a bit uncomfortable and concerned about Ding this time is that he did show a lot emotion and frustration-like gesture at the table, while he hadn't been that in the past no matter winning or losing, which in someway had helped build up his positive reputation in the game so far IMO. Why couldn't he just keep doing so? Maybe as the other mate says because this youngster thinks himself a star already? Or maybe he really wants to have a chance to show some damned emotions but not pretending a labour iceman anymore? We don't know the reason(think his father might have found him on phone to talk ). What I hope now is that he can quickly gets his head together again, one loss is at this stage nothing but a kind of valuable experience. I believe with such a great talent as he has, he could really make himself a huge success in the future if he is able to look to his road ahead with even more intensive attention and effort and of course in the very acurate direction.
Thanks again Hegeland for your kind discussions and supports for our young countryman, normally I really don't like to participate in some too sharp or fierce debate on a public forum.

I also agree on the last post. I think Ding never said he is a great player. Its the commentators who do that and the fans. I have said earlier there will be flaws now and then. If he is going to step up the ladder, I will say, Well done! If not, pity but no man overboard. i dont know why mcmanusrules shoudl be so agressive on this one. Over the top.
ps. all players mentioned by Dan are great prospects, but have not won anything decent (yet)!

Possibly because when they were 17, they were not invited to the Masters, on the basis that they were not foreign.
If Ding was some lad form Southampton he would be budled in with the rest of them, World Snokker, invited him cos he is Chinese, and its rocketed his career.1994 a good year

Ding has for a long time been a bigger talent than the others in his generation.
You can't really say it has been an advantage for him to come from China, maybe now but certanly not in the biginning of his career. Remember, his mum and dad had to sell their house to afford to send their 16-year old son who barely spoke a word of English to the other side of the world to maybe be a pro snooker player.

macmanusrules, if you keep saying about the wild cards, maybe you'd like to see how ronnie, hunter and higgins handles their first ever televised match, or maybe their first match at the masters. they were certainly not as impressive as ding. anyway, let the time tell...
to me, the only way, he can be greater than hendry is by winning the world championship this year, or the next at the lastest. otherwise, he'll be another williams, higgins or sullivan at best...
