  • Hendry - Not good enough

Watching Hendry it has become clear he simply hasn't got the game anymore. Yes he reached the semi of the world championships, but that was more down to the opposition playing poorly. When he reached ronnie he was found out.

This season has been a disaster for him, barely reachinga second round. He now trails 4-1 against Higgins (who aside from 1 frame has played very poorly)

To be quite frank, I fancy Jimmy White beating Hendry in his current form.

So where does Hendry go from here? What would he do should he drop out of the top 16? Stay and fight to get back? Or is it all over for one of the greatest players the game has ever seen?

I was expecting a longer career for Hendry, like Davis, but it just isn't materialising. Hendry doesn't seem capable to carry on in this way.

To me, he will be out of top 16 within 2 seasons....

As long as Hendry is in the Top 32 (he's provisionally #10) he's playing pretty decent snooker and you shouldn't take that away from him. He's very capable but he's not making the most of it and he knows it.

I wouldn't be so quick to deny him a future in Snooker. His career is far from over.

I have always thought that Hendry will retire if and when he drops out of the Top 16. I really can't see him playing in the qualifiers.

The way things are going, he might drop out of the top 16 at the end of this season. He's 40 in January, so maybe the end is near?

It is painful watching him these days to be honest. And I don't get much satisfaction from seeing him lose liek I used to (being a major jimmy fan)

But...to see a great go so far under isn't that nice to look at and all players will end up lack lustre with age.

        Age is ****.

Say that to Davis or Harold. I don't think it's necessarily true that age is crap. Harold is having a blast and he's 51 I think (or is that Davis?).

EDIT: Well, Harold's 41 and that's old by Snooker standards

yes but in all honesty, davis is also a shadow of the player he was. He has simply managed to keep a better standard with age than hendry has

The problem for Hendry is that his game (unlike that of Davis and Harold) is more youth based. Long potting and break-building are hugely dependent on sustaining your concentration for long periods and you just can't do that at Hendry's age. He was more willing to engage in safety at the WC (which neutered his young opponents somewhat) and that's what he's going to have to do if he doesn't want to be off the tour in five years.

Dont know if its been noticed before, but Hendry backswing has gone from about eight back strokes per shot down to four and sometimes two or three :snooker:

Its easy to write off hendry after what he as achieved. starting a thread just on "hendry" isnt particulaly fair on him.

there are worse players on the main tour

Lol, come on. He's still better than 60% of the players at the moment. Some of the young players are just shocking.
Fair nuff, he hasn't found his A Game in a few years but no doubt the guy's still got it.
Just because he's not had great seasons doesn't mean he's not a good player. Was it Fu who never won a tournament in ten years? Everyone still 'raved' about him.

Not ones that are in the top 16. I think Hendry is at this moment, the worst performing top 16, aside from graeme dott, and that wouldn't be fair on dott since he has had tons of problems recently and has barely played

                        .

Where? He has been dumped out of every event this season in R1 or 2. His rank points this season are now amongst the worst of the main pack and if he doesn't get into winning gears soon he will not last lomg in the top 16.

If not for his semi WC appearence it could have been sooner. It certainly hasn't been even 60% hendry. The play today was the poorest I have ever seen him play....

                          Peck is spot on.
The brain works differently now for Hendry and the strain of extra concentration wears on an older player (I can vouch for that).
As well, if he isn't achieving his own game, the B or (today's) C - Game doesn't cut it and there goes confidence... the desire to win fades.
He cannot play his old game. Period.
Hendry has a weath of experience which he can call upon to play smarter as Peck suggests... think Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman - "Rumble in the Jungle".

Hendry's started last season just as miserably, going out in first rounds. Then he was in two semifinals.
I'm not a specialist in such things, but today for me it looked like his nerves got the better of him. He was trying to pot everything he saw and doing it in a haste. When he slowed down a bit - he's made century.
                            It's confidence, not the ability.

I don't think its just confidence..His game is really bad for many years now..
I think he should work with a good coach for some time..There may be some problems that he can't see himself..
