perhaps not too close, so that accomodation, travel plans, and family arrangements (kids etc) can be managed better?

(i know this one is ripping the urine)

Well i guess it makes it bit easy for the oversea players, they just need to stay for 2 month, and if they didnt' qualify, they can go back, which will save them alot of travel/staying cost. Also other events can be scheduled to avoid these busy periods

That's a fair comment Sarmu I suppose, but one that is definitely surmountable...

Were there matches starting at 11 today? Or did I imagine that?

Edit: Yes there are, and Ding is losing
You play a long slow deadweight red to a corner pocket. As it approaches the pocket, a kamikaze woodlouse crawls out from under the cushion and makes its way across the table, conflicting with the path of the red precisely at the point the red gets there. The red, needless to say, veers off course, and the future of the woodlouse is uncertain. - The Statman

Ding is bad at qualifying. I think that much is obvious. But put him in a tournament and he's good to go.

But - if you want to be the best, you have to be the best in any circumstances. It's his problem that he can't perform in qualifications so well.
