  • Some Early Masters Thoughts

I've never seen Stephen Hendry miss an easier ball than that green yesterday. That said, Murphy's fluke hurt badly, and why is he the only person who doesn't acknowledge flukes? It really gets my goat the smug way he walks round the table after that - and to think Hazel irvine introduces him as "the liekable Shaun Murphy" - LOL

Anyway, back to my thoughts. The walk-on music does add a bit of oomph to the beginning of a match, and i think given time it will catch on, but it is quite embarrassing to see a lively walk-on like Mark King's in front of a crowd of about 37 people.... I think this is where Mr Hearn can have a bit of an effect. If we're struggling to fill a massive auditorium like Wembley for what is the third biggest event on the calendar (apparently) then things need shaking up.

I'd suggest no afternoon session and an evening session that starts at 6pm with 2 games one after the other. I'd also say right, if players are leaving the arena after every single frame which they seem to be doing, let's do away with the fifteen minute break. You either have one or the other to keep the flow. If 11 frame matches are too long to get two in the evening session, then lets go back to best of 9, but 2matches for the price of 1 with a full arena has to be better than 1 match played in front of 7 men and a dog - can you imagine how many would have gone to watch an Ebdon vs Dott match on a Tuesday afternoon?

Finally, the scheduling has to be better. Make the draw then schedule the games. Ronnie O'Sullivan playing in the afternoon is just ridiculous. Look at the darts... how many times do you see Phil Taylor play in the afternoon session? Very rarely. In terms of growing as an entertainment, you have to put your biggest draws on at the times when people will come and watch. So Ronnie HAS to play in the evening as that maximises the potential crowd.

It should be and could be an exciting time for snooker.... let's hope so

I still think the attendances have been surprisingly good so far, so I wouldn't panic just yet. If Ebdon-Fu had a very good crowd, I'm sure Ebdon-Dott would have got a decent one as well. And it's only going to get better at the QF stage.

I'm not sure having O'Sullivan in the evening maximizes the crowd either. Surely O'Sullivan-Robertson will get virtually a full house no matter when it's played, whereas Carter-Williams may get more in the evening than in the afternoon. But I do agree that the top matches should get the more prestigious slot.

I like your idea about no afternoon session but only if the format stayed the same and it didnt go on longer than the 7/8 days. Something needs to be done too as you rightly say about 3/4 minute breaks in between frames and maybe getting rid of the MSI would be a good thing?
Always play snooker with a smile on your face...You never know when you'll pot your last ball.

I certainly wouldn''t want to see World Snooker "do away" with the MSI in favour of letting players leaving the arena after every frame, the MSI can play such an integral part as we have seen on so many occassions..

Fair enough and the mid-session interval does allow the spectator to have a pause for necessary bodily functions I suppose. If that's the case, then they should be a lot stricter on players disappearing from the arena between frames. Ding really gets my goat with that.

Another thought is that for all their pontificating about being the place that shows World Snooker, the BBC is still doing a pretty poor job. Red button this, red button that. I couldn't even find Selby vs Ding on the red button. Given Mr Hearn's contacts within Sky, I think the BBC, rightly, might have to pull their finger out in that respect.

A lot of water drunk during the frame helps concentration but also means the toilet is frequently needed.

Sorry, don't buy that, not the levels that people leave the arena today
