Every shot is awkward at the moment as Mark struggles to work his way into position, but a couple of good recovery pots go in and he's now perfect. That said - he misses the easiest of the lot to break down on 22 and leave Murphy in again.
Another easy red missed ! Murphy breaks down on 18 but leaves them safe again. Safety shots follow, Williams gets away with a double kissed shot to nothing, more safety. Murphy is forced into a long red, misses and Williams is well in again.
Williams mops up the easiest reds with colours to lead 59-18, but misses one off the black spot. More safety follows...
Murphy gets the first look at a long red but, commits but misses leaving Mark the easiest of reds over the middle. No mistakes this time as Mark quickly finishes off the remaining reds, a lovely exhibition shot to yellow, another to pink and he takes the frame with 50. 109-18 (I think), the match now 2-1.Last edited by Robert602; 26 August 2008, 03:55 PM.

Meanwhile in frame 4 Mark got in early and has already taken 7 reds with blacks. Lovely plant for the 8th red. Chance for the maximum. Mark attempts a split off the 9th black but doesn't quite get position. He has a red but with no angle to get round for the black. He drops the red in for position on the brown, making sure of the frame.
Misses a red to middle on 85 but the frame is his, 85-0 and by far the quickest of the match. Interval with Mark leading 3-1 then. The way Murphy has played Mark would be disappointed with anything less than 3-1 but both have made too many mistakes to look a threat to the tournament.Last edited by Robert602; 26 August 2008, 04:05 PM.

Just for the record, the other matches finished:
McCulloch 5-2 Robertson
Harold 5-3 Dott
Back to Williams-Murphy. Williams starts us off with a good shot to nothing double, he's on the black.... But misses the second black while attempting to split the pack. Mark has the luck this time though and leaves nothing for Shaun. Safety. Reds now all over the table as the players attempt to return the white to the black cushion, Murphy leaves his short though and a golden chance for Williams to middle... which he puts on the far jaw. Murphy has a trickier starter which he too misses and Mark, after all that, is the first one in.
Mark gets a kick on a black leaving him with a difficult next red, but he strokes it in. Now on a break of 45 leading 54-0 with 67 on. Awkward blue to corner safely away... but he misses an easy straight red with the next shot! Higgins in the studio thought the pockets looked tight, I'm inclined to agree as the players seem to be playing easy shots a little too casually and they're not dropping as you'd expect. Maguire didn't have any trouble though.
Anyway, Murphy runs out of position on 20, 59-20 behind and plays a mediocre safety. Mark mis-hits his reply and goes in off. Both remaining reds are in baulk - great chance for Shaun.
Shaun fails to get on the right side of the yellow which forces him to leave a tough cut green along the cushion. No mistakes this time though, and he clears with 37 to take the frame 61-59.
