What had Williams achieved by this time in his career?
Selby is 27, by the time Williams was 28, he had won 2 masters, 2 world championships and in total 15 ranking events. There is no comparison even at their relevent ages Mr P.

Got to be Williams for me, he's one of the all-time greats and between around 97-03 in what was for me the strongest era that snooker has ever seen in terms of strength at the top of the game, he won two world titles, completed the BBC Slam and reigned as world number one for three years. Says it all really.
Yes he has struggled to repeat that form during the past few years but having won so much it is understandable that his motivation might not have been what it was during those glory years and off the table I gather that things weren't ideal for him.
Selby meanwhile is a very strong player, probably one of the top four in the world at the moment in my view and I would expect him to win the world title within the next three years. Despite that though he's not on the same level as Williams for me and I can't ever imagine him being.
Nothing against him at all, far from it, I just remember how good Williams was and don't see Selby matching his achievements in what for me is a weaker era at the very top.sigpic

Time will tell on that front, it's possible in terms of World Championships certainly, although I would be surprised if he were to get up there in terms of ranking titles won.
As I tried to say above though, it wasn't so much the achievements on paper that impressed me about Williams at his peak but a)the standard of play that he produced and b) the calibre of the opposition that he did it against.
Perhaps Selby will win three or four world titles and overtake Williams, I don't quite see it but you never know, but until that happens then you I find it hard to see how Selby can be regarded as being 'better' as Williams, other than if you are looking at their 2010 levels of play and even then it's a toss up.sigpic
