  • Seeing Jack beat Selby in the manner he did with clutch clearances and a dish in the decider was the best moent of the season so far for me. Great effort and great achievement reaching a ranking event final in only his fourth pro event.

Does anyone know who reffed the Hamilton v Wicheard game? He (or she) must have been knackered after that!!

no its a stage in the PTC Series Tom Ford has won Stage 3 of a Large Tournament hes not Reached a final or won a tournament.

its like the Football League played over a Season or i liken it the Tour de France.

            • I think I would liken PTC events to ATP250 events in tennis (which is the lowest tier of the 4 tiers for the top players) - with the World and UK being like grand slams, China, Shanghai, World Open, Welsh and European/German being like Masters events.

              • yes but they are played in arenas the PTC is not i think its great and gets players playing but you cant call Tom Ford a Ranking Event Winner based on these.

if a player wins 11 of these does that meen hes won more ranking tournaments than jimmy white ?

                • I like Snoopy's comparison very much.

As for Wild's point of view:

the venue – the fact that these events are played at the EIS may very well be a temporary arrangement. It would have taken much more time to book other venues and the idea was to launch the PTC-EPTC project as soon as possible > actually about three weeks after the EGM in which Barry Hearn got the players’ vote

the stat aspect – PTC century breaks are added to the players’ ton capital so why not the titles? But Wild’s idea is correct: we can’t mix things up. Yet we should perhaps be a little more flexible and accept there are now more event categories and these PTC-EPTC legs, pro-ams as they are, fall in the category of minor rankers. Rankers alright, but minor. Minor alright but rankers.

So I think we may say that Tom Ford has won his first ranking title even if that is a minor event’s title.

Tony Drago,Joe Swail and Troy Shaw won minor Ranking titles early 90s they have been forgoten about.

plus Chris Small that won a Benson and Hedges Championship qualifying for the masters that 1 year carried minor Ranking Points.

But at least Chris Small finally won the 2002 LG Cup, much better than the others.

                      • True but the fact that people forgot about those titles is not OK so we shouldn't repeat past mistakes. What I mean is that maybe we should have more stat categories: major titles and minor titles. I don't think it's fair to just forget about people's wins especially as we talk about ranking event wins.

To give a more accurate picture this list should include non-ranking wins also. Some of the older guys did compete in a time when there were very few ranking events, even in a time when the WC itself was not ranking.

Steve Davis for instance won the UK twice when it wasn't ranking, he won the Irish masters 8 times when it wasn't ranking.

                            • That's right. So maybe categories should be:

                              1. Major titles
                              a) ranking
                              b) non-ranking

                              2. Minor titles
                              a) ranking
                              b) non-ranking

Don’t I know how to endear myself to statmen?.....

same with Alex Higgins he is down as winning 1 Ranking Title but he won the World Title (last before Ranking) UK (Last Before Ranking),Masters and Irish Masters which were Majors.

Regarding The Irish Masters the Irish Masters as a non Ranking Tournament was Different to when they wrongly made it Ranking.

Also UK Championship before 1984 was only Eligible for UK Players

so Ding,Wenbo,Doherty,Robertson etc could not play in it...Cliff Thorburn did not play in it until 1984.but the funny thing was 4 non UK players did play in it Patsy Fagan (first winner),Big Bill (twice) Kirk Stevens in 1982 and Billy Kelly (Irish) ???
