  • Power Snooker

The name of Power Snooker has been flying about for a few months now, nobody to sure exactly what it is or when it is going to happen but I have been doing some digging around and have found out when it will be staged, where you can get tickets and even how it will work, oh did I mention stage mockups also.

The actual date for filming the event will be Saturday 30th October with a live audience but it is unclear at this time weather it will be live on TV or broadcast at a later date. I do know that we should have Point of Sale posters, logo's etc by next week as there is a photoshoot scheduled this week.

The original concept of Power Snooker was that of Pat Mooney, but after a conversation with him last month about this I understand that he no longer has a part to play with Power Snooker but wishes it success for this good fun concept.

Originally it was to be a 6 event promotional series with in excess of 500k in the prize fund but this is far form what I have been told. This is going to be a one off show with only £75,000 in the kitty.

    How it will look
These are concept shots of how it will look

    How it will sound

    This advert was placed on a website last week for a voice over for the promotional video;

This is a 'Rules of the Game' information film. The voiceover for the Rules of the game of Power Snooker, will be dubbed onto a 90 second film showing pretty closely what is being spoken. The game being described is a new version of Snooker. The completed film will be shown at a media press conference. The voice needs an air of authority but not too much. No real emotion, just straight information but it is a new game so must be a positive voice. A 'London' ish accent may help, but not 'cockneyish'
    The Rules

The rules are the same as traditional Snooker but with a few matchroom style variations for instance there will be a shot clock, ball in hand after a foul and each frame will have a 30 minute time limit.

    Here is where it gets complicated;

    Century Breaks

A century break, in any frame, will be rewarded by a fifty point bonus, and if this is repeated in the next frame, a hundred point bonus will apply, and, if again in a third frame, a two hundred point bonus will be earned.

    Power Zone

The area behind the baulk line will be designated the “power zone” – if the cue ball is struck from within the power zone, any colour potted will be worth double.

    Breaking off

There will be not 15, not 10, not 6 but 9 reds on the table racked in a diamond like some pool games, when a player breaks, two reds must hit a cushion, if this is achieved the player keeps control, if not, the initiative is passed to his opponent.

    Power Ball

The middle red will be a powerball when potted, this will trigger a two minute power play during which every ball which is potted counts double, if a shot is missed during a powerplay, the clock stops and the players opponent will take over the remaining time in that particular powerplay.

    Prize Money

The scoring system is one like the oneForSeven system with a rolling score board, prize money is split
    1. £35,000
    2. 15,000
    3. £8,000
    4. £5,000

    • Loosing Quarter Finalists £3,000

The venue is The 02 arena and players linked with the concept are Neil Robertson, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Ali Carter, Jimmy White and Mark Selby not sure who the other three are yet but my guess would be possibly one of the new players like Reanne Evens or Patrick Einsle and possibly a Chinese player, Ding or Liang

Too many rules for it to be fun and exciting IMO!

I think they should drop the shot clock, there is already a 30 minutes time limit on the frames which will probably never be reached as the concept is to score as many points as possible so who is going to get into a strategic game when every point counts.

It does look like there are too many rules for ordinary people to enjoy it. I suppose it is a good idea and I am certainly not against change. I base my opinions on what it actually is, but from what I have read in the post, it's a bit over the top. We must not forget that this is a professional sport and while there is nothing wrong with more relaxed events the powers that be must not get carried away.

Anyway, what did most of you think when you read 'Power Snooker'? I bet that most of you thought it was just another of those pathetic ideas to make snooker look good.

Really, points become irrelevant when you think about how most frames are won most of the times by the top players: one opening usually leads to a frame winning break. At that point, the points system, whatever it may be, is a bit irrelevant.

The shot clock is what snooker needs, if anything. The Premier League is a nice concept and this gives very good tv, a very good show with and you dont get the sloppy play because the weaker players arent in there and the shot clock forces everyone to keep the rythmn instead of having some holding up things on purpose.

9-ball is popular due to the nature of the game: fast and no time wasted.

The Premier League in snooker works well as is popular. Instead of trying to come up with weird ways for new concepts, maybe they should start with the obvious and go from there. I personnally dont mind safety play.

The problem isnt a frame that takes 40 minutes due to safety play. The problem is 40 mins frames that are that long due to poor play (which we've seen in some games) or because some players are slowly the game down on purpose by taking alot of time on each shot, just to get this opponent off their game.

A simple shot clock would help alot. Then, if you want better snooker shown on tv, just dont show some matches from the 1st rounds of some tournaments and instead show all the 2nd, quarter finals and stuff of these same tournaments where lesss of the weaker players get.

Its not that hard to figure out. I dont see this new concept working at all and I'm not one being opposed to new things (heck, I quite like these with my gf but thats another topic ).

            So 9 reds....

"A century break gets 50 bonus points"

Maximum break with 9 reds.... 99

So, you would have to either get a free ball or deliberately play to get out of position on a baulk colour in a maximum clearance to score double yellow, green or brown to end up getting those bonus points.

            An interesting, if over-complicated, format

Go back and read the rules and you will see how more points are gained, 99 is not the maximum.

                  I missed the powerball thing

I withdraw the comment about the maximum break, but am now totally bewildered by the complexity of the rules instead of just mildly perplexed.

Are television broadcasters going to be interested in this? If not they might as well forget it and think of something else.

Maximum break of 189 I reckon?!

EDIT - Just seen the 'powerball rule'. Its even more! lol

I have to say i'm not impressed, I don't think I would have time to understand exactly what was happening or what the scoring system was while a time limit was being implemented, I certainly wouldn't like to be the referee.

I was just checking the date and it is not April 1st.

So if you pot a black with the white in baulk during 'powerplay' is it worth 28 points?
And can anybody tell me what the difference between a 'London' ish accent and a London accent is? or indeed the difference between a 'London' ish accent and a 'Londonish' accent?
Just something about the way the advert for an annoying guy to do the voiceover is worded tells me this isn't going to appeal too much ...
