I agree, think King has a good chance of beating either Murphy or Cope in the quarters based on his performance from today. But beating possibly either Williams or Higgins in the semi may be a step to far for him.

Harder to get position? The brown was literally hanging over the right top pocket...

There was nothing easy on. So, he took a shot-to-nothing, thinking that he will cut the red in and follow that pot up with a d-line color.
He didn't respect King to be honest. He would have definitely played a safety with such a significant lead under his belt, against Ronnie, John, MJW or someone as strong..

Well, I am glad Selby is out. King played well, better than I have seen for a while.

Well, there were couple of straightish reds to the left middle. Ok, cue ball was tight on the cushion but those weren't that difficult. That's why I find his shot selection odd at that point. I don't think safety shot would've been a rigth choice either because there was a clear chance to win the frame from there but he made it too difficult for himself...

I know. Safety wasn't going to be the right shot, either. But I know, that could well be his choice in another game.
Anyway, he blew up a huge chance there..

Until somebody knocks Higgins out, I'll be fearing a relatively exit for my favorites (Ronnie and MJW), though..

To be honest I found the shot strange, as the possibility of leaving a quite easy opener was obvious playing the shot to the corner, and it was quite easy to make a much better safety, and sometimes he also makes those strange shots even agains the "big guys", the missed red at 12-12 against John Higgins comes to my mind.

You don´t get a break out of potting a red, if you can´t find a colour next, and if he left the white ball in that end of the table, it could be frame lost. And thats how it ended anyway

Am not a fan of Mark King but he played very well today, possibly the best I have seen him.

Again, there was brown ball hanging over the pocket. So after potting the red to the middle there would've been a color available. Also for what I saw it was possible to play for that brown. It couldn't have been more difficult than the shot he went for...

My conclusion is that he was, at that point, more concerned about leaving an easy opener and losing the frame than wanting to win it. And that so often is the wrong approach. It's of course easy to shout from here but my guess is that no other player would've played that red.

I've criticized Selby's shot selection before and this was another example. He's is sometimes trying to gain too many things with one shot: pot, position, safety (or safish place for the cue ball). And that doesn't work all the time as good a player as he is. And I also think that's one reason why he isn't winning more tournament...
