He donesn't know his snooker though. He says that Paul Hunter was the only one to win the Masters three times. Cliff Thorburn won it three times and as we all know, Stephen Hendry has won six Masters titles.

Maybe he meant three times in successive years. I believe Paul Hunter is the only one to have done that ?

Paul Hunter won it in 2001,2002 and 2004.
Stephen Hendry won it from 1989-1993 and 1996.

I am sorry, but in my view White is wrong to put this forward. Paul Hunter was a great player and probably a great guy too but to name the Masters after him is just wrong.
The scholarship that they have done in his name will have a more lasting effect in my opinion. You cant go naming tournaments when players die, where would it end.?

I could see them renaming this year's masters as a one-off tribute, the tricky bit would be taking into consideration the sponsor's wishes as well. I personally think that would be quite fitting. It is a bit unrealistic to expect them to rename one of snooker's biggest tournaments indefinitely.

Can't see any good reason not to rename the trophy though. There's just the minor point that, as far as I can remember, the trophy Paul actually lifted three times was the huge golden cup, and they gave him that to keep in 2005.

The last winner of the huge Gold Cup was Mark Williams in 2003 - that was the last Masters to be sponsored by Benson and Hedges.

Paul was the first winner of the current trophy in 2004.

Stephen Hendry was given another of the Masters trophies to keep in 1993 after he won his fifth consecutive title.
