  • Jimmy White

It saddened me to see Jimmy White play so poorly against Matthew Stevens. He looked like a player very low in confidence and seemed resigned to losing in frame 7 when around 60 points behind he took on a do or die shot and missed then shook hands with Stevens.

Sadly Jimmy played like the world number 56 today and Stevens looked as if he was practicing in his club most of the time.

I Jimmy remains in the top 64 and on the main tour because I don''t think there are 64 players in the world who are better than Jimmy.

However on this evidence I'm not convinced we will see Jimmy on the main tour next season.

Getting that wildcard must have put a lot of pressure on him. He wanted to do so well for his fans in London
I saw that going differently in my mind

it seems Jimmy is not going for a slow decline. Like John Parrott. White stayed for 20 plus years in the top 16. Dropping out of it, seems to have triggered the total collapse which he does not deserve. he even looks like a local league player nowadays, missing straightforward chances. The ones I am missing over and over! How can that be?

Maybe Jimmy's been watching the 'Paul Soave guide to playing Snooker'.

What does jimmy actually have to do now to stay on the main tour? Two out of seven events left he has a chance to qualify, with the china open qualifiers in two days. How many matches at these two does he have to win to stay on the main tour? Or does he have to rely on everyone beneath him doing nothing for the rest of the year?

Regardless, in this form it's unlikely he's gonna win a match this season, nevermind get to the final stages of an event.

There's only 2 tournaments left for Jimmy as he has already lost in the qualifying rounds in the Welsh and the Malta. so if he fails to win a qualifying match again in both the China and Worlds i think he's doomed to be relegated to the second tier PIOS league. If he chooses to battle on if that happens.

its sad to see White play this way-he has proved by his performances this seadon in the bet fred league he can still cut with the most of the players at the top of the game-albeit with a shot clock in opoeration-remember the 5-1 against Ding

but when it comes down to the qualifiers maybe he just cannot motivate himself. i think he will need to win at one match-matbe two to stay in the top 64. with the longer qualifiers to come in the world championship that maybe his best bet

He's currently doing a tour of the UK in Rileys clubs, and coming to mine on the 6th of March.
I'm in the draw to play him, probably at pool, but it's likely I'll get to see him playing snooker there, and how he plays when the pressure is off.
Anyone else had him at their club, or still waiting?
I agree with Paul about his approach, but I'd really like to see him relax a bit as well, although this is obviously easier said than done.
If he doesn't change something, it's not looking good for his place on the tour!

Its a great thing he is coming to your local Riley club and playing pool or snooker with the legend. You should enjoy every minute of it. Afterwards, maybe you whisper him a bit of advice.

I'm pretty sure he can stay on then tour even if he loses everything this season, he wo,ld just be sensationally screwed next year.

So I think one match (especially the WC one) would keep him on the tour for one year.

                          Just a thought...

I watched this match closely, and judging by the margins Jimmy was missing some of these balls (pressure aside for a moment) I suspect eyesight may be an issue. As a first pot of call, maybe its time for Jimmy to get an eye-check as a rule out option? It goes without sayiny Jimmy is beating himself up - and in typical fashion, it has a knock on effect. The more badly he plays, the more he gets frustrated. I'm not sure what the future holds for Jimmy - for the last few years I have refused to write him off, always sure of a return to form. This last season however has me doubting his ability for the fisrt time. Does anyone know if he is coached at the moment? If I was Jimmy, I'd get back to basics and get a coach to oversee my current game and the benefits would hopefully begin to show in the qualifiers. He cannot carry on with his current routine and hope to stay on the main tour, but we all know he is capable of better...

trouble is though-having had another look at it he is currently provisional 56-but that only takes into account the three ranking tournaments already played. he has been knocked out of two more at the first hurdle so he will only be getting 1/2 points. so i would suggest by the time the china open (still in it) qualifiers are played he will definately be out of the top 64. so it could get very interesting.

Indeed Archicrooks. It is easy to forget that the provisional rankings do not include ANY part of the tournaments that have not been completed yet – even the qualifying rounds that HAVE been completed will not be added in until the completion of the whole event.

As you say, it looks pretty dire. Although, he has dropped only a few places to his current provisional (from his official), so I think the situation is still salvageable – just. But I think (without having done any mathematics) he cannot afford to fall at the first hurdle in the remaining two events.
