Two times I remember the defending champion having quite a bit of difficulty getting through the first round (Hendry in 1996 and 1999) he went on to win the championship.

Liang's had some run of the balls too I'm sure, Higgins has been the better player tonight anyway, the more the match went on, the more Liang seemed to wilt, at least until the break to make it 9 all, Higgins always looked more likely to me to come back rather than Wenbo storm over the line
