Like it or not, it's the Ronnies of the game that keep it alive, financially and in the public eye, to the great benefit of the Burnetts and Harolds. It's not unreasonable to be pleased when 'instant thrills' type players get through to the TV stages, and equally not unreasonable to be disappointed when they don't. It's not a question of personal (dis)respect so much as a concern for the future of the sport (in a time when a future is far from assured).

I personally think the clashes we get, between hardworking, battle hardened 'journeymen' and young untempered talent, are a fascinating aspect of the game, and I wouldn't have it any other way, but I recognise that not everyone feels the same.
While I hesitate to get involved in commenting on such an exaggerated response to some satirical comments (and I'm not referring to this quoted message, Robert) may I just say to Robert – Well said!

To say that, of all people, PaulTheSoave has a dispespect for certain players is bordering on the ridiculous! What he does have is a sense of humour, one which often brings itself out in his posts.

This is my last comment on the matter.

PS Paul, can I buy your ticket?

      • I'm wondering what this will do to Jimmy White's ranking. Some the players lower than him on the provisional list like Lawler, Campbell and Delaney have qualified at his expense. Quite frankly, the only way I can see him staying on Tour is by qualifying for the Crucible.

Am I alone in thinking this is probably the end of the road for Jimmy? I can't see him wanting to spend a season playing on the Open Series, and I doubt World Snooker will give a wildcard for next season - surely that would be rewarding failure?

Even if White loses all of his first round matches, he'll still have 10725 points at the end of the season (and 4275 points on the one year list).

So I don't think he'll lose his place on the Tour for next year.

          • The year after that may be a problem though - let's say that he loses every match this season, will he really be able to fight his way through two or three qualifying rounds to get to venues? He's having enough trouble negotiating one!

Alternatively, the disastrous season he is having might be the motivation he needs to really practice hard for next year - he is proably so used to being a top 16, or at least top 32 player that Prestatyn is a major shock to his system.

Are you sure 10725 points is enough to secure a place in the top 64 then? I have not looked into the matter, but to be honest I very much doubt it.

              • Going by this season's official rankings, 10,725 points would have put White at number 63, so he might just hang on for next year.

It's mathematically possible for White to drop out of the top 64 with a score of 10725 points, but very unlikely. A lot of the lower ranked players need to reach the final stages of the remaining tournaments for that to happen.

Very stupid decision IMO. UK Champ is the second most important tournament of the season. I don't know the background though so I should be a bit careful with voicing my opinion.

I was wondering exactly that the other day when I read he's due to play in the Asian games.

                        • Actually, I would be more concerned if Liu Song pulled out as it seems now that he might. If I were Drew Henry I would be most annoyed that a player who in all probability knew he could not compete played anyway.

Edit: According to Asian Games site Liu Song is competing with them. I personally think tha's a disgrace, he should have withdrawn and also he should get no ranking points for his win. Why reward him?

                          • I have heard that only Ding Jun-hui, Tian Peng-fei and Liang Wen-bo will go to Asian Games but not Liu Song. He came through the qualifying rounds hardly and successfully so more likely he will continue to play in it.

                            • I'm confused if Ding can get back for the UK then why can't the others?

                              • Ding is seeded in the last 32. The others only reached the last 48.
