  • I've just got back from York having watched the first session of the Ronnie v Walden match...I was very impressed with Ricky Walden. He looked good in amongst the balls, as did Ronnie as usual, but there were many kicks and a couple of balls sprung off the cushion! This was especially the case in the second to last frame when Ronnie was clearing the colours (which were on their spots) and the shot from green to brown ended with the white in the other half of the table!! Ronnie missed it, Walden failed to capitalise and Ronnie fired in a long range effort and took the frame. So I actually think Ronnie will be the happier of the two at 4-4 as it could easily have been 5-3 to Walden.

I was sat in between that table and the Williams-Greene one...I fear for Williams who was missing straight pots and running out of position often. Greene suddenly sprung into life after the interval and ran off 3 frames in about 15 minutes! He's always been capable of this but surprisingly he hasn't taken it to the next stage.

I'll be returning tomorrow afternoon to watch the remaining frames...

Also, great to see so many people in attendance...there were no spare seats for Ronnie's match and the Davis section was also pretty full...puts Aberdeen to shame.

Thanks for reporting back from the venue. I was curious about the attendance. Last year it was very empty!

There was a funny exchange in (I think) the last frame which illustrated Ronnie's good sportsmanship....Walden had broken down on about 18 and was left stuck in a small bunch of reds. The ref said it wasn't a touching ball but Walden thought it was...they each looked at it about 3 times and they couldn't agree! So Ronnie, uninvited, got out of his seat and went and had a look and agreed with Walden and said that it was indeed touching. Walden subsequently rolled the white off two cushions to the baulk end and came up right behind the yellow, snookering Ronnie on all reds!!

Actually Ronnie seemed to be in a decent mood, at least after the first couple of frames anyway. On a different occasion, he was snookered on the reds and missed 4 times, leaving an easy opener on the last occasion. When he walked back to his chair he pulled his leg back and motioned to kick the chair with considerable force...a small incident perhaps but hopefully it showed that he's in a good frame of mind for this tournament (early days yet of course).

I wonder what odds this would have been. All matches 4-4 at the interval!

                        • Notable things tonight: David Gray became the seventh player ever to score a 146. Peter Ebdon made breaks of 125, 124, 123, 110, 98, 96, and 72 in his match against Mark Selby. Pretty impressive play from Peter!
