    Perhaps that sequence will continue.
That's a bit of an overstatement. The only two players who went on to win the tournament after beating Hendry were Walden and Higgins. He lost to Lee in the NIT, to Stevens in Bahrain, and to Lee again here (he could still win it though). So that's 2 out of 4(5) this season.

In last season's part of 2008, he lost to the eventual winner in the Masters, the Welsh open, and the Worlds. He lost to Hawkins in the China Open, and in the gruop stage in Malta (although, he did play Murphy).

I agree however, that he hasn't lost to a "mediocre" player for awhile. He plays Neil Robertson in the Masters btw.

no player turns up to play hendry thinking its going to be an easy win and that is a fact.

I really hope you're right Marc, you need to give him some lessons in positivity!

The three top 16 players knocked out in the first round lost to matthew stevens, mark williams and stephen lee.

does anyone see any shame in losing to any of them?

            thought not!

Honestly, the OP is being completely ridiculous.

I think it was Matts post where Stephen comments on his loss in this tournament and this is what all the people calling for Hendry to retire should read and digest.

Hendry has no obligation to retire if he loses "x" amount of first round matches. If he wishes to play abysmally every match, miscueing and tearing the cloth every frame, he can do, if he wants to scrape enough first round matches to stay in the top 16 then he can and if he wants to play vintage 1 visit snooker and make his opponent look like a little sissy girl who can't hold a cue, then he can.

Why do people feel that he has to play to certain standard or else he has to retire?! If he's entitled to play in a match(whether that be due to him being seeded through or if he qualifies himself or if he's wild carded) then he can play however he wants.

If you find it embarrassing to watch, or if you think it's an outrage and in some way he's damaging the sport, or whatever your reason for telling him how to handle his career and demanding his retirement, then there is a very simple solution. Press the red button, change table, or stick with it and enjoy the other player playing well. The point is, if you don't like it, either, watch something else, or stay watching and please don't tell another man who's far far far far far more qualified that you to retire. It's ridiculous beyond belief.

As long as he's allowed to play, he will do, wish him luck and cross your fingers for him, or wish him ill and revel in it. But for Christs sake,he's far more qualified than you are to understand what he needs to do. Whether it's more work at the practice table, or an eye-transplant, or spending 2 years in the Tibetan mountains with Buddhist monks or even, his retirement.

It's up to him, and I for one, am glad.

I think its too soon to write Hendry off. OK, he's going through a rough spell but he's still up there at no6 in the world although Im not sure what his provisional ranking is. Just a bad patch maybe?

Stephen has 2 choices carry on and ocatianally play well or quit at the top.....

as was said on thread his play against Stephen Lee was so bad it was embarasing to see in a profesional tournament but in the last year hes reached 3 World Ranking semi finals the Worlds included. so he stil can play against these players but not consistant.....

im sure if he drops out of the top 16 he will go..........cant see stephen going to pontins in no capacity to play or visit...

I think you are right ,
he hasnt got the love of the game or of competetion when things are going wrong like Steve Davis ,to try and give your all when you are struggling so much.
Thats what puts Davis head and shoulders above the other two greats - undoubtably Hendry and O'Sullivan,as Davis just will not give up,never! However Hendry is probably too much up himself to go to Pontins.Dont misunderstand me ,I think Stephen is a great player,I have met him a few times too and I quite like him,but to me he is definately lacking fight when all is not going his own way!
I would also say one thing to him.....change your cue!

No Hendry was a winner -still not as prolific as Steve Davis.....More pro titles won than anyone else!!!
However he is only 39 or 40 and virtually over the hill .....where has all the fight gone ???
