Leading bookmakers suspended betting on a key clash in today's UK Snooker Championship after becoming concerned about unusually heavy betting on a particular scoreline. Victor Chandler, Ladbrokes and others pulled their odds on correct-score betting on the first-round match between Stephen Maguire and Jamie Burnett after a flood of bets on Maguire to win 9-3. After resuming this afternoon with the score at 6-2, Maguire did in fact defeat his fellow Scotsman 9-3.

William Hill, which does not offer correct-score betting before the quarter-finals, had also pulled its odds on bets for the overall winner of the match. Bookmakers have reported the matter to the game's governing body, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, and the Gambling Commission.

The Association of British Bookmakers, the umbrella organisation that represents the biggest names in the industry, is understood to have conducted its own investigation into the unusual betting pattern and issued an advisory note to its members on Friday afternoon flagging up its concerns.

It has passed on its report to the WPBSA and the Gambling Commission, which is already looking into betting patterns on a snooker match in which the former world champion Peter Ebdon lost 5-0 to the world No40 Liang Wenbo. Both players have denied any wrongdoing. "We've suspended betting due to suspicious betting patterns on an correct score of 9-3," said a Victor Chandler spokesman.

It is believed that bookmakers became suspicious when a number of bets were placed on Friday, all predicting the same score at odds of 6-1. Cliff Wilds, head of sport at Victor Chandler, said the bookmaker noticed several bets from new online accounts being opened in the Glasgow area, all betting on the same score. He said that correct score bets usually tended to be made in the 48 hours leading up to a match, rather than four days beforehand.

He added: "With lower ranking events we would normally be a bit more wary about things like this. But the fact that it is the second-biggest tournament of the year, and is televised, we wouldn't normally expect to see it. It may be something we have to look at."

The bookmaker will conduct its own internal investigation and also wait to hear back from the Gambling Commission and the WPBSA before deciding whether to honour those bets that were placed.

The WPBSA was approached for comment and was considering its response at the time of publication. The players were unavailable for comment while their match was in progress.

Jamie Burnett was aware of the betting before the mid session interval as he confirmed after a post match interview. If he was not aware of it, I surely would have got my doubts the way he missed the deciding black in the last frame. He missed it by a mile. But because he was aware of it, he explained he felt so much pressure not to miss, he eventually did.

Although JP and the commentators in the box said, its very odd a pro missing a black with such big margins.

Yet another one... this is bad, even if it is not true, it gives a bad reputation to the sport
I should have watched the match...

Wasn't Maguire under suspcion in Malta too? Presumably for a 9-3 scoreline both players would have to be in on it otherwise it couldn't be guaranteed.

And to think I got an 8 year ban for just agreeing to throw a match!

As I went for a 9-3 result in the 1st round of the prediction contest I would just like to say I had absolutely no inside informationand have played absolutely no part in any match fixing whatsoever. If the statman wants to investigate this i am more thaen willing to help with any line of enquiry.
i must however state that any allegations to the contrary will be dealt with by my lawyers.

            thank you.

Just hope it isn't true. Snooker just doesn't need this kind of bad publicity!

I note 13 predictions of 9-3, eleven of them early ones, out of 70 so I don't expect the Prediciton Contest to be of much use as evidence. 25 (more than a third) went for 9-4 – if that had been the result I would have suspended the contest!

Burnett's miss did look very suspicious even before I even heard of the scandal. Maybe there's a double twist and Burnett threw the last frame away even though he knew about the betting? So this way he can use this as an "alibi"?

What an interesting conspiracy theory I got here..

Furthermore I saw a second interview with Burnett and his facial expressions did not look very convincing to me. Like a small boy who just was caught stealing from a candy box.

I guess it could be tempting when a player is in the lower ranks, average below par income and keeping livelyhood going.

We'll have to wait for the investigation, if there will be one at all. Whatever the result of it will be, I will not be surprised.

It would be interesting to know who the betting people are. Might be, a lot of links will lead to WSA HQ to up the conspiracy theory.

Furthermore, the journalist throwing his shoes at President Bush is actually a spokesman for WSA, who acted on orders from Sir Walker as a manoeuvre to distract the entire British press from the biggest betting scam ever.
