  • Maguire closes in on The Rocket

Stephen Maguire's quarter final victory over John Higgins sees the two swap places in the latest Elo Rankings with Maguire moving into 2nd place - and 49 points behind Ronnie O'Sullivan.

If Maguire wins the tournament then he has a chance of taking top spot for the first time.

The current ratings can be viewed at the Professional Snooker Elo Ratings.

why is anyone interested in an alternative ranking system ?

This one may or may not be a better system than the current official and provisional ones, but as it is not the one used by the pros for their rankings, it doesnt really count for anything

The only 'true' ranking system is of course the odds the bookies offer at the start of a tournament - there isn't a better gauge of how well a player is doing than his price.
