Nearly A Referee Mistake

In the 8th frame of Robertson vs Dott, when Dott potted the re-spotted black, the referee called "7 and frame, Graham Dott". At that point in time, Graham placed his cue on the table and started to walk out of the arena. The cue-ball was still travelling and headeing towards his cue.

Luckily for him, the cue-ball pulled up well short of the cue. In fact, also, the referee had started to take the balls out of the pockets as well!!

Just to clarify, a stroke is not complete until all balls have come to rest. Had the cue-ball hit Graham's cue, it would have been a foul and Robertson would have won the frame and match.

IMHO, it was a bad call on the referee's part. He would have looked a bit of a fool if the cue-ball had hit Graham's cue after he'd announced that Graham had won the frame.

Your right of course, but it looked as tho Dott checked to make sure the cue ball was going to pull up, and to me never looked like reaching

I did spot that too. But I agree with the above that I think Graeme had recognised that the cue was not in danger of touching the black, and I'm sure the ref would have changed the call if the cue had made contact.

It happened a few weeks ago in one of our league matches. My teammate was refereeing and our opponent cleared the colours to win the frame - but as the cue-ball ran down the table after knocking the black in, the player picked it up (or stopped it) and took it twoards the other end of the table in readiness for the next frame.

I remarked straight away that he was lucky to win the frame - and that if I'd been refereeing I would have fouled him for the black shot.

We lost 5-4 :-(

I noticed this last night as when he placed his cue down the white was still moving at a fair pace, but lucky for those involved it slowed down.

Would have been funny to see Dott dive back over and grab his cue out of the way while shouting 'Nooooooooo' in slow motion !

No it wasn't. It was the same referee that allowed Robertson to have extra long breaks between frames in 2010 in his semi final (?) abainst Martin Gould, without warning him for ungentlemanly conduct, which, it most defiantely was. I'm sure there is a thread about it, so pointless starting one now.
