Just looking back through the history of the UK Championships and since 1997 the winner of event has won the semi final on the saturday bar one. Ebdon is the only player to win on friday and then win the event back in 2006. So 11 of the last 12 UK Championships winners have come from the bottom half.

Is it worth Ding turning up on sunday?

That's a fascinating statistic. Do the players who play on Saturday have a competitive edge, or is it just coincidence? I'd guess it's the latter, as looking at the finalists, 8 or 9 winners were probably the favourite to win the final.

And it's the same this year. O'Sullivan or Higgins could add to that statistic, but they would be the favourites no matter what day they played on. It just happens that the defending champion was not really the tournament favourite, but the 2nd and 3rd seeds were, and they are in the other half.

Absolutely correct. Considering the defending champion generally( ) can't defend his title, the highest seeded player in the bottom part of the draw is the favourite.

Also, 3 titles for Ronnie in that span, 2 for Williams, 2 for Higgins, 1 each for Stevens,Maguire,Murphy,Ding... This proves that it is just a coincidence.. Apart from Murphy, it would be the same result had the players played their semi-finals on Friday..

            no

competing idea to coincidence one: maybe whoever makes the draw takes care to put the possibly stronger (=more interesting) semi on saturday - to attract the audience to turn up on saturday?

by the way, would the draw guarantee that defending champion always had semi on friday?

I think Ding will join the "Friday winners" club.

If the format is exactly the same each year then yes, it would. Because the defending champion is always first seed.

Are the first four seeds always fixed in the draw so that 1 plays 4 in the SF, and 2 plays 3? If that's the case, it's an interesting scenario this season. We have two outstanding players that are considered a class above everyone else. One of them is the world number 1, the other is the World champion. That means they cannot meat in the final of any tournament where one of them isn't the defending champion.

Sets them up nicely for the Masters and World Championship though
