  • Venue for The Welsh Open

As some of you may have already hear The Welsh Open next year may not be staged in Newport and venues in Cardiff are being looked at by World Snooker. I have said in the past that especially in 2008/2009 that the venue in Newport was a disgrace because of all the building works going on and a alternate venue should of been found while the regeneration on the city center was going on, this year with most of the building works finished it was a pleasure going to Newport for The Welsh Open.

The Welsh Open (baring The PTC events) holds the lowest amount of prize money than any other ranking event and I think moving the tournament to the capital of Wales will produce more criticism than leaving it to be hosted in Newport unless a big bucks sponsor can be found.

Newport is a little run down and it does not exactly have the best of reputations but this all ads to the character of going to this event, after getting off the train in the morning I head to the local coffee shop as the locals are heading to the Weatherspoons opposite for their first pint of the day, but this is what makes Newport, Newport.

To sum up what I am saying I would like you all to listen to this little song on youTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNfbX6uvA6s

Mr Hearn please reconsider moving this event to Cardiff, it just will not be the same if it is moved away from Newport,

    cheers butt

      a pleasure going to Newport?!!!

Newport is the arm pit of Wales and it's a dump of a place to go to.

I still dread to think what the Yanks are going to make of Newport when they arrive for the Ryder Cup.

We just hope they don't think it's representative of the rest of Wales.

I've been to Newport before, and I definatley agree with Janie, it's a complete dump to put it midely. I have also visited New Quay, Porthmadog, Aberyswyth and Dendigh and they are all beautiful places that I would not hesitate to re-visit.

Well it's a relief that people get to see other parts of Wales and don't judge the country on Newport.

As my avatar shows it's rather beautiful and that's the view from my lounge window! I'm near Denbigh out in the AONB - so much nicer than the big cities even though I can't get a Starbucks!

I'll be spending a week in the other Dinbych – Tenby to give it its English name. Take the southeast out of the equation and Wales is pretty much 100% glorious!

Having said all that it would be a bit of a poke in the face for Newport to have continued there during all the disruption of their redevelopment and then buggering off just as they've finished it!

I must admit I've got a bit of a soft spot for the Newport trip, partly because it's my nearest big event and partly because there's something a bit twee about visiting such a small-scale venue in a nondescript city, mingling with those who are in the building purely because they fancy a swim!

If it does leave Newport a part of me will be quite sad, although not as much of me as was sad when it left Cardiff for Newport!

Yes of course. Mark lives not far from me and plays in the local pub league in Denbigh still!!

I spent a few glorious holidays with friends in LLangybi - not far from Newport - beautiful countryside around Usk etc.
I shouldn't think the golfers will venture outside of Celtic Manor - let alone into newport Town Centre.

He's a quality player. Did you happen to watch him last night?

no. I don't really follow the darts much these days.

                      But you're right he's a quality player

Pretty much my thoughts. Sometimes the venue and the general mood at Newport reminded me of the Paul Hnter classics in Germany. It's like a big family meeting. The players seemed very relaxed to me. I'm going to miss the typical smell of the swimming pool And I'm going to miss the nice guesthouse we stayed at in recent years
But wherever the Welsh Open will move: I'm glad it's still on the calender.
