Mark Selby was approached by a member of the public at the beginning of his quarter-final match against Anthony Hamilton at the Welsh Open in Newport.
George Barmby handed Selby an envelope - removed unopened by an official - and said: "You are being served with a writ and bankruptcy notice".
Barmby is a former manager of reigning Masters champion Selby, the pair parting ways more than three years ago.
A World Snooker spokesperson described the incident as "inappropriate".
"This person was asked to leave, which they were happy to do, and escorted from the building," they added.
Selby's title defence came to an end as he was beaten 5-3 by Hamilton, who will now face Ali Carter.
