  • What a night, just got back in and I'm shattered so the full report might have to wait until the morning.

In short, Hicks was sensational, best I've possibly ever seen him play. Won the frame before the interval to lead 7-6 with a superb clearance and as soon as the final black went in, slammed the table as hard as he could and went out delighted. White didn't do a great deal wrong but Hicks was just inspired.

Great breaks in the final frames from Wells and Delaney, Joe in particular who potted a stunning long red that surprised even himself. Good effort from Supoj as Song looked very dodgy at one point, but he just about got over the line.

And what a nice bloke Barry Pinches is, top guy.

      • 2 high centuries by Jimmy, not bad. He should be able to skip a qualifying match next year, no?

Hicks has a reputation for saving his best form for the world championships. I wouldnt be surprised to see him qualify for the venue now.

Unlucky for Jimmy. After a fairly decent season, (hasnt he qualified for the venues in 5/7 tournaments (very good going)) he fails in the one that means the most. Hopefully he can continue playing decent stuff next year, and he should have one less qualifying round to play in too.

          • True, guess he must play like that quite often at the qualifiers, just the first time I'd actually seen it live. Jimmy was just so inconsistent from frame to frame, he'd make a century then play a terrible safety shot or miss a sitter, then make another big break...but the right man won ultimately.

On the bright side though, getting parked was hell in the morning, at least that will be easier for me on Tuesday

            • im looking but i cant find any after match quotes from jimmy anywhere. shame he didnt see off that unlucky 13th frame when he had a big lead, going into the interval 7-6 ahead and in the lead for the first time..i think hed of got through.

gonna take me a few weeks to get over this defeat, always devestated when jimmy loses...but at least he had a good season, and will be back next year, with 1 less qualifying match.

its a darned shame he wont be at the crucible though

              • On the bright side, he can start preparing himself the next season. (yeah, right )

                • I don't understand why people are really upset. Did you guys really expect him to get to the World Championship televised stages? Look on the bright side, he's provisionally 55 and he'll most likely stay there. He's gone up 10 places from last year and overall he's had a pretty good season. Being provisionally 55, he's not that far away from the Top 32 and this will give him a better chance to qualify for televised events.

What a clearance it was from Hicks though.

Was chatting to Pinches later, he said he was wondering what on earth that noise was

Made me laugh when Lewis Roberts dropped his cue in the afternoon, David Gray nearly had a heart attack on the next table.
