I see no reason to sing praise for Cope based on one match against a somewhat out-of-form Joe Perry. As someone said, it's all about consistency. We'll see in the next round.

The way I looked at it, is that Joe was not out-of-form but simply failed to cope with the pressure; while Cope was also tense, he was still able to put himself together better than Joe could--that was the difference.
The body language between the two were quite obvious to me, that Cope was eager to win, focused, despite being nervous, but Joe seemed frustrated, and looked kind of mad at himself when his snooker and/or safety failed him.
Of course I agree that you cannot judge a player based on one match, but in this match, I would say that Jamie Cope did not act like an inexperienced flasher potter, and Joe Perry did not act the experienced "multi-dimensional" player some said he is.
It must be hard to play with someone who can pot real well like Cope, who could put breaks together the way he could whenever a chance is presented.
I think Cope at the end was a bit too tentative when he had a chance to cut the brown in or played the roll up. He should play his game, be on the offensive. If he starts to think defensively--playing not to lose rather than playing to win--he cannot beat Higgins.Last edited by poolqjunkie; 21 April 2009, 03:58 PM.

Totally agree - he has a bit to prove - he looked like a real star 2-3 years ago, but has always hovered on the edge of the top 16 and I think he now needs to get to the semis to get in. However, he is one of those players that on his day can beat anyone, but on an off day is there for the taking - if he gets consistency into his game then like him and Allen I see those as players who should start to win tournaments. Totally agree though that the consistency needs to come and an all rounded game, but they are all still young and we'll see in next couple of years.
Ronnie is no longer at his peak, but no-one has really challenged yet. The next 2-3 years I think are crucial for the likes of Murphy and Maguire otherwise the new breed of the aforementioned and Trump etc will start to mature. (possibly!! ) I think Selby is a little younger so has a few more years.

His touch is so soft and smooth, I've always liked that. Bit unorthodox cue action, although, but effective. Very effective.

And this time is no exception.
I am not sure what BBC showed, but overall, Ding is ahead of Liang in many departments such as number of 147, number of 100, number of titles and so on. As far as the game is concerned, I would say Ding's shot selections, cue ball control, ability and consistency to play a wide range of shots, and his touch, are all ahead of Liang. I especially think Ding is quite ahead of Liang in the fine touch positioning shot department.
Ding is his own worst enemy.

I'm happy that Cope is through, but I wasn't impressed with David Hendon's very biased commentary, no need for that really. He has a habit of picking a favourite during the match and than bulding him up and saying how great it will be if he wins.

He has the shots, and he has the ability. If he could gain more experience getting into the finals, semis and so on, in majors, he will mature and be able to perform to his true potential on the match table.
I do not agree that he lacks the safety game, I think he could play good safety if he wants to, but he is an offensive player, and his specialty is his potting. If he starts playing the grinding game with his opponent, he will be playing their games and be at a disadventage.
I see that as a mental issue more than some problems with his game or his ability. At the end of the match today, I could see that he was tense, and his shot selection and his cue ball control seemed to suffer a bit, but still he was able to pull through. If he could do this kind of thing more often, his confidence level will rise, and his ability to handle pressure will improve, so would his consistency.
In my opinion, if he has the right frame of mind going into his next match, he has a chance to win.Last edited by poolqjunkie; 21 April 2009, 04:27 PM.

Overall Cope acquitted himself well & reminded many just how good this guy can play - Perry performed admirably i thought for most of the match & had chances but couldn't really compete with the barrage of heavy scoring from Cope.
Like some other posters have said he's only won the one match so far so a little too early to get carried away - & the true test will be if he can sustain the kind of form he shown against Perry & take that into his 2nd round match against (possibily) John Higgins. I would really like to see Jamie Cope go far in this Championship as there is no doubting his ability plus he's good to watch!"Statistics won't tell you much about me. I play for love, not records."

Basically the standard of snooker so far, to be generous, leaves a LOT to be desired.
I thought it might be nerves ... but look at Shaun Murphy... he's been there - done that...
The seeds I've seen play, aside from ROS and Allen, basically suck.
Why? Am I expecting too much, too soon?
=o)
