  • Sorry, this media is not available in your territory."

Every year at this time, I settle in front of my pc for hours world class snooker, the problem is I live in Canada, so I can't watch any of the streaming feeds on the BBC and Eurosport websites, if I click on any video content it says "Cannot play media. Sorry, this media is not available in your territory."

I can't even view the recorded highlights or archives. Last year I used a proxy server to log on to the sites, but this year my proxys failed, and so I began hunting the net for sites relaying the feeds. The World Championship 2009 - Live streams! thread was extreamly helpful in finding links for the matches.

The "territory" the BBC refers to is North America, and as I understand it, many other regions as well. We're all constantly hearing talk about snooker being a dying sport, sponsership money is down, there are less ranking events, and tv viewership is down. Why then is there this great effort being made to make the game watchable to only a select few? The BBC says they only have rights to broadcast in certain areas, fine. But why aren't Rodney walker and World snooker actively getting snooker broadcast by another international provider, either on cable or on-line? There are millions of people who love to play and watch snooker in Canada, and the U.S., and World Snooker and the networks involved are making a bad bet by making the game so inaccessible to so many potential viewers. It only forces those of us who want to watch to find illegal sites which are pirating the BBC coverage. There is no legal option.

I'd love to hear TSF's thoughts and ideas for solutions to this issue.
My own suggestion is this: www.worldsnooker.com should carry live uninterrupted feeds of every table, with out commentary, dedicate intermissions to advertising to cover the expenses, and of course make the feeds available world-wide.

i completely agree, its ridiculous the lengths you have to go to to watch snooker if you live outside of the UK or europe.

Ive heard that the popularity of snooker is growing in europe largely due to eurosports snooker broadcasts, this would suggest that one of the key ways to increase the popularity of snooker in areas where it is realativly unknown is to make the viewing of top quality matches easily accessable.

I really think World snooker have completely failed to take full advantage of the internet to promote the sport internationaly, another plus to setting up a online broadcast of snooker would be that targeted ads could be broadcast depending on where in the world you are watching from.

Yes, it does seem like they have missed the train here. How great would it be if they could set up streams of both tables? Be a real meeting point for snooker fans, instead of just having a so-so web presence. Right now I'm watching the Beeb anyway, with some silly pr0n ad. I could have been watching the Beeb on the net, with a local advert instead. I would have paid for that. That being said, I have paid for the Eurosport player, but the BBC streams are just more interesting at the moment, offering so much better commentators.

Eurosport is doing a good job of bringing snooker to more people outside the UK/Ireland, but the WSA (/BBC) could do things to catch those who a) cannot get Eurosport or b) want commentators who don't dumb it down (assuming they are dumbing it down on purpose) to beginner level and keep explaining the rules every 5 minutes.

Bottom line is that the WSA needs to take its role more seriously. Look at ways to promote the sport, perhaps get in at least one person who can have some thoughts on how to use the Internet to reach out, not just to be there, without any visions.

Oh I second all of the above
The way the WSA-site is doing, we have to be glad live scoring seems to work most of the time these days.
In what "territories" does the BBC stream work? The UK and ...?

And what exactly is a territory nowadays? Sounds awfully colonial

PS - Wikipedia says: A territory is a defined area (including land and waters), considered to be a possession of a person, organization, institution, animal, state or country subdivision.

Sorry M'am, your territory is not owned by our goldfish. Not showing you snooker...

Ok, didn't really have the energy to read everything above but it shouldn't be a problem cutting around the territory issue. Just go to a free proxy, I'm using www.goproxing.com, and go to your desired broadcast from there.

Try it, and if this is not at all what you asked for - I'm sorry for being lazy...

This isn't working at all. All along they were discussing about making snooker more interesting and stuff... but seriously, people who loves snooker love the way it's played. So why bother? They should make use of Television or Internet broadcast as a mode to spread the sport across different countries, not just making the sport more popular, but also attracting more talents from different countries to play the game. That itself would make the sport more interesting.

I have no problem watching it on channelsurfing. Quality is great, and I love to hear the commentary (well, most of it...)

Justin TV also offers chat room for viewers to discuss and do whatever while watching the game.

But I know what you are saying, and I agree that it would have been much better if we could have better access to snooker on TV and the Internet. Definitely would make the game more popular.

Have you tried the Eurosport player? It's quite cheap - about £4 a month but I have no idea if it would work in Canada.

But http://www.channelsurfing.net/watch-...-sheffield.php for table 1 and http://www.channelsurfing.net/watch-...heffield-2.php for table 2 has worked fine all along. Good picture quality and no interruptions. So what's the problem?

I think the OP meant to highlight the problem that there was no way of getting these streams in a legal manner and that the WSA (or some other clever individuals) ought to have thought about possibly setting up a streaming facility that covers the entire world.

The site is tunnelling a stream that belongs to the BBC, of course it's not legal. It might not be directly illegal, depending on where in the world the server is located, but it certainly isn't done with the blessings of the BBC. These sites pop up every month and close down quite frequently, but by then another one has popped up.

Unless they have permission from the bbc (which i doubt they do) to make the bbc stream available to people all over the world rather than just those in the UK then yes
