Denis Taylor mentioned that the pockets are more generous this year. He didnt explain why though. Anyway, we should be greatfull that we watch a great championship, and not be bothered with such things.

I thought Hendry missed his final black by overcutting on that 147, but it went in. May be it is the cloth?
I started a thread about this on the 1st or 2nd day of the WC and Ferret said he went to ask the officials and they told him nothing was changed.

I'm not an expert but I've heard from a trustworthy source that the template hasn't changed. However in addition to more frequent reclothing, there has also been recushioning this year. From what I got, when the table has been freshly recushioned the pockets tend to be more "tolerant" for a while ...
Don't ask me more, as I said, I'm not an expert.

          the pocketrs are huge

Money talks, maybe the sponsors played a part. However, its a joke, Hendry would normally have missed 3 balls in that max. Even the so called experts are admitting they are big for once.

            Well, I gotta cut in. I wouldn't if I didn't find Neil's post. (on another forum )
Here you go, read and enjoy:

"1st. thanks for the support guys

2nd. The pockets are no bigger than usual except they are changing the cushions more often to stop the big bounces this year. If the pockets were any tighter u would hardly see any breaks going in. Steve Davis told me the pockets are much tighter than the 80's. I look at alot of shots that go in on some of my matches when I watch the replay. And trust me, the balls hit nowhere near where you think it hits. On camera they do look alot bigger. Pockets are pretty much the same as my practice table in cambridge. Ask Vinnie what they are like.

Thanks again for the support guys. im off to bed "

i think its time to thicken cloths and make tables slower.......

i honestly believe great players would make centuries on carpets but whats happening is standards down the ranks isnt higher than it was early 90s but the tables compansate for failings and breaks that might fail at 49 or 50 15 to 20 years ago are extended to 75 and a frame win today by that 1 or 2 wide balls that just happen to drop.

in 1982 when Alex Higgins won the 135 break he had to win the tournament was the 13th that year.

today standards are higher than 1982 theres no doubt about that but all this talk of supersixes is a concern that maybee they have tampered with the tables slightly but the conditions are exactly the same for everyone so its fair matchplay no matter what they been doing to the tables..

I agree and have been saying this for a while now. The nap of the cloth is part of the game.

The pockets are probably the same size, but you can under cut the rubbers so the balls go in easier I think it was Joe Davis who came up with this idea many moons ago.

I do think that if the pockets are not measured wider, they are playing wider. It might be possible to open the pocket up and still have it meet standards. Maybe tickering with the tolerances to the cushion and slate drop, a more generous pocket can be achieved. With sponsorship what it is, perhaps the consciences was, more high breaks were needed. I certainly do not think that the fitters are to blame. The powers that be could easily have asked the fitters, how do you provide more centuries? It might be as simple as leaving the last bit of the cushion unglued. Would this not cause the knuckle to play dead, causing the ball to rattle and drop? Perhaps one of our fitters can help?

Hya, I'm back in business, just watched the semis and finals yesterday and today.

That pink was probably the most far-off shot to have gone in that I have ever seen, and hopefully ever will see. Murphy looked stunned, as if he'd made a fluke. Thorne was flabbergasted.

I hope we never see this sort of joke for pockets on TV again.

                        Hey hege

and that red that rolled off near the green pocket that let Higgins pinch a frame told me the tables werent great this year.

That pocket had been doing that since they moved to one table though. He should really have played it harder, but you shouldn't need to at a professional tounament!
I still have nightmares about that pink though
