The official world series site (www.theworldseriesofsnooker.com) claims that they are planning to reduce the number of reds to 6 per frame in early rounds, 10 in the semis before reverting to the usual for the Final in Warsaw. This surely makes a mockery of the game? Why not go the whole hog and just start with the colours?

There is not way local players could compete with the big boys in the present state of things. In principle I'm totally against the 6-reds idea, but, after the 6-reds tournie in Thailand this summer where he was runner-up, Stu Bingham said on this forum that it is a way to "level" the players. So maybe it is worth a try here. Another aspect is that 6-reds makes the frames shorter, freeing time for other types of snooker activities, in particular with young people.
I must say I find the resistance to innovation and expansion that some display on here both irritating and puzzling. This is a game that needs to develop because the economic context and the competition of other sports might well put its very existence at risk.
The fact that Eurosports broadcasts the World Series is evidence enough they take it seriously - meaning they see the interest and the potential in mailand Europe, particularly Germany and the eastern countries.
And thanks John Higgins for the good work. I have read some posts claiming he was doing this for his own pocket. It may be, I don't care. He does it and well and that's what counts!Proud winner of the 2008 Bahrain Championship Lucky Dip

for players local or not to improve they got to go through the process of getting hammered by better players and learn the game that way...
by reducing Reds youre selling thoes players short and making a mochery of the tournament....

Moving to 6 reds will not make it any easier for the locals against the Pro's what it may mean is that the matches are over quicker!
The Sangsom 6 Red event out in Thailand was a huge success with the likes of Michael Holt travelling out for the event. I don't think it detracts from the game of snooker as a whole, I think it has to be put into perspective, the growth of snooker into Western and Eastern Europe is massive for the development of the game and for a sustainable future, dropping to 6 reds for these invitational tournaments is not going to cause an issue with this. I also think it would make it more attractive to a non-snooker TV audience as the game suddenly becomes quicker.

Perhaps you would care to enlighten us on what you found crap?
The fact that the local boys did not measure up to the professionals? The WSS is about promoting snooker - they are not setting up an alternative pro tour - and it's going to be a while until the Polish and German etc players can offer tough competition in the presence of World Champions and maintour tournament winners. Patrick Einsle and Lasse Münstermann have both been on the maintour and Chris McBreen is on the tour this season. Patrick Einsle just made it to the semi final of the PIOS event. It's a good possibility to build their confidences, to experience playing at an event like this, far from Prestatyn - with audiences and the full works. Lasse Münstermann gave John Higgins a run for his money in Berlin and he did well in Fürth last week as well.
The atmosphere in Berlin was great, the venue was sold out. Ok, so the audience clapped and cheered a bit indiscriminately, but there WAS an audience. More people came to watch in the Tempdrom than at many of the rankers. There are rows and rows of empty seats during the initial rounds of most of the tournaments, but not so in Berlin. The players were all very excited about the atmosphere and want to go back next year. They didn't think it was crap - what makes it crap to you?
I'm not crazy about the idea of reducing the number of reds, but if it is what it takes to make the WSS work right now - with it not exactly being helped or welcomed by the WSA - then I'm all for it.
John and Pat Mooney deserve nothing but recognition and applause for their initiative. If (and this is a big IF) they make money in the process - Christ, what is so wrong about that? If we leave it to the Brits to keep snooker going we're not going to get anywhereDas war ein FLUKE! Ein Glückstreffer!

If I’m not mistaken they had to cancel part of the program in the WS in Berlin, the Junior matches or doubles, don’t remember, because the previous matches took too long. Maybe that’s why they are trying to find a way to speed things up for the next round.
I was happy with the normal format, but since I never watched a 6 red match I’ll give that a chance and watch it before I say it’s no good.
I can’t help feeling sorry for the Polish fans though. They were very enthusiastic with the pilot round in 2007, and since there are no ranking tournaments in mainland Europe, WSS was the next best thing for them and probably for many other continental snooker fans. This possible change to 6 reds kind of steals that away.2008-09 Prediction Champion

The reason they are crap? Easy.
1) The local players get steamrolled. Don't put up a fight or anything.
&
2) Since they earn no ranking points even the big players don't even bother performing well there. Having watched the tournaments that happened so far I'd guess close to no centuries have been made.
And now I really hope the new Bahrein ranking tournament won't be disturbed by the World Series.

And no. The world Series was disturbed by the Shanghai Masters ... despite the dates were known to WSA long time before.Proud winner of the 2008 Bahrain Championship Lucky Dip
