Can anyone explain why/how Sam Baird is allowed to play in the preliminary world qualifiers. He is an amateur and has been playing in the easb amateur pro ticket events. It is supposed to be only members of world snooker who can enter the World Championships. Im puzzled!

Tough draw for Steve Davis. A potential match against Lisowsky or Liam Highfield, and then Stephen Lee stands next.

wonder how much it would cost to get someone to kidnap some snooker players and take them to a nice holiday resort for a week or so in march, preferably david gray, liu chuang, tom ford and ryan day. im sure theyd have a nice break.
              Blown away

Agreed LUFC. Not that I agree with this stipulation that you should have to have "professional status" (whatever that means!) to play in the World qualifiers, but the rules are the rules and Sam shouldn't be in this tournament as he is an amateur this year.

I'm very surprised that Barry Hearn has not opened the World up to everyone again. They used to charge £300 to enter and they used to get loads of amateurs entering; then they put the entry fee up to £750 and not so many entered; and finally they closed it to all non-pro's. It seems like a no-brainer to me to open it up and give everybody the chance to play in the biggest tournament in the world, whilst boosting the coffers in the meantime. I'm sure one of the Academies could house the qualifying event(s) and would take only a week or two out of the busy calendar.

So the long battle to get to the cruicible has started. David Gray won his first match in a decider, while Tony Knowles lost. And tomorrow the first from the tour enters the arena. The battle for top 64 is very close, so it will be some interesting matches to follow.

With the new rolling rankings the results of the other matches won´t be as decisive as they used to.

Here is my take on the battle for the tour spots.

It's all about James Wattana in my view really.

And unfortunately Reanne Evans looses once again after taking an early lead. As she has been in front in many matches, it might be the burden of beeing first woman on the tour that´s been to heavy.

I think not winning a match whole season might be more of a mental barrier. She wasn't too bad against Baird, although she only had one half century in 16 frames. A 10-6 loss doesn't sound too bad, though it also must be said that Baird is currently an amateur (he's not far away from pro level of course).

I think there's nothing wrong with saying that Reanne is - at the moment - just not ready for pro level snooker. I wouldn't say it's a mental thing either, it's more that she lacks match practice against truly tough opponents, as breezing past everyone in WLBSA events clearly isn't enough to get prepared against other pros. I'm sure she can improve, but getting back to the Tour and staying there will be very very hard.

I can see, that you qoute me, maybe it´s not quite clear what I meant, but basicly I agree with you. A bit like when Jimmy White couldn´t finish off the WC and players like Stevens, Day and others are having trouble getting over the line.
