I don't see it mentioned a lot, but didn't John essentially get away with the more serious charge of match fixing because of a technicality, namely that it was to do with a competition that he and Pat Mooney set up, so the WPBSA had no jurisdiction over it?

    From the bbc article:

According to Hearn, who backs the three-time world champion to return to the top levels of the sport, the charge of match-fixing was dropped on a technicality.
"It was felt that the match-fixing (charge) could be challenged legally because the matches involved were not under the auspices of World Snooker: it was an independent, private event," said Hearn.
"It fell outside the rules of the World Snooker Association."

The two links HERE, published only three weeks after the allegations were first printed, and HERE after the verdict was announced, convinced me that there was no way the NotW's evidence would stand up to a conviction.

But besides all that, for me, last weekend had nothing to do with any allegations of any kind. For me, it was the pleaseure of watching the best of the old guard against the best of the new generation, battling it out for the sport's top prize with not a great deal between them. My eyes were on the table and nowhere else.

Never mind that it was Higgins; it could almost as easily have been Williams.

On the whole, I think Higgins has received a warmer reception since his ban than he could have expected (certainly warmer than I expected) and I think, on the whole, the game has come out relatively unscathed. This final has boosted that no end, more to do with Trump's semi-unexpected breakthrough but Higgins played his part in what I'm sure will be remembered as one of those classic finals.

I must add that I was glad the crowd reacted as it did - it showed absolute disapproval of the act despite your thoughts on the sentiment.
Em what gave you the impression that i was pleased about the heckler!!!

                That says it all.

I wish i was like these well adjusted people who just say move on but i do not get it at all.
Apart from the shameless Higgins supporters i cant help but think that some of you are diehard closet Higgins fans. And it must be hard for you to deal with the fact that your hero has done this but heros dont sell out or agree on back handers.
                Harsh i know but true.
I get no joy from saying this and know it is my problem, maybe if he says sorry.
He seems nice and genuine, i dont understand him at all as he comes across like he is the victim in all this.

I think this is why this wont go away until he finally sticks up for himself publically, its been over a year now.
If someone violated a code of conduct caught on tape outside his employers auspices or not you'd expect that person to have made more of a fist of it since then, his fathers unfortunate demise is nothing to do with that.

                            SPOT ON.

there was no tournaments they were just hypothetical tournaments. its easy to say what can be done when there's nothing there to do it in.

yes it was wrong and he got punished for stupidity and naivety.

It is my understanding that he was there to create the tournament.
