The tournament, which runs from April 17 to May 3, is one of the highlights of the sporting calendar, as the most prestigious and coveted title in snooker.

All of the sport’s star names will be battling for the trophy and a first prize of £250,000, including ‘Rocket’ Ronnie O’Sullivan, Shaun Murphy, Mark Selby, Stephen Hendry, Sheffield-based Ding Junhui and defending champion John Higgins.

The box office opens at 9.30am on Saturday and fans are advised to book immediately for the best chance of getting tickets for the sessions required. To book your seats, call 0114 249 6006 or visit www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

A spokesman for World Snooker said: “For 17 days during the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship, the eyes of the globe turn to Sheffield to watch one of Britain’s great sporting occasions. It’s a fantastic tournament full of drama, exciting matches and brilliant play. Last year there were 83 centuries, smashing the old record of 68, which shows how much the standard of play is improving. There are many contenders for the title this year and it promises to be another classic.

“The event will be televised live in over 60 countries worldwide, with a global audience of over 180 million. For the lucky few who are able to get tickets, the experience is a truly memorable one.

“The Crucible and Sheffield have become synonymous with snooker, having hosted the tournament for over 30 years, and we were delighted to announce last year that we will stay there until at least 2014. In April we’ll be welcoming thousands of dedicated fans from the region, and much further afield. Certain sessions get sold out very quickly so we advise anyone who wants to experience the greatest snooker show on Earth to book their tickets now.”
