He named that huge kick he had on the red when he was leading 6-5 (Ithink) as a crucial moment and he was right. Some would say there was a long way to go in the match still, but after years of bad running one can't help but think "here it goes again" every time it happens and it's bound to get you down and affect your confidence.
Take into account Poomjaeng's helpful little rubs frame after frame and I sympathise with Maguire and understand him lashing out with a hit and hope now and again just to try to get it out of his system and release that tension.
Spot on assessment regarding Maguire. Must be one of the unluckiest players on the circuit and if its not him getting bad rubs such as kicks or balls not splitting well for him its his opponent getting all the flukes and nice rubs. IMO if he had the run of a Selby or Bingham two players that heavily rely on luck at times to get results, he'd no doubt be a more prolific winner of major titles. He has a lot more to his game than many of the top level players but he must have upset the snooker gods at some point to have such dreadful run time and time again. Maybe his problem is more psychological but its hard to put it out of your mind like you said when he's had so many scars from defeats such as this.

What do you expect? He's spent most of his commentating career wondering where a cue ball has gone.

      • I have really been enjoying the great snooker being played.

Trump looks relaxed and playing very smooth. Ding is always someone
I enjoy watching as well. I am looking forward to seeing how Robertson
        plays.

Lots of great matchups to see.

Luck is an illusion created by the human mind to explain things which are either too complex to comprehend, or too large or small a scale to understand.

Here is a possible partial explanation for you..

Shot selection plays a large part in "luck", as does how shots are played. Some players more consistently pick shots with slightly lower chances of "unlucky" outcomes, and slightly higher chances of "lucky" outcomes. This, over time, makes them seem "unlucky" or "lucky" but it's not luck, it's poor/good shot selection/execution.

            • Newby here...

I would interested to hear how people think Selby played last night, my impression was that he struggled throughout and was fortunate that Selt was playing even worse them him in the first 4 frames, Selby made some decent pots and played a reasonable safety game but I just felt he was consistently losing position amongst the balls. I only ask as I read a report saying that his price had nipped in the with bookies after he impressed last night??

              • Milkins and Robertson match now on. A good start by Robertson who always looks like he's in control and oozes class. A top player.

I hope Milkins can keep it close.

Robertson has a real presence around the table when he is playing well, I am a big admirer of his and think he has a big chance of winning this year.

You're not kidding, Stevens has pulled it back to 7 and Fu's just broke down on 34...

                        • Does anyone know what make of cue Robertson use's? I've just been to see him play at sheff and his cue doesn't have a makers name plate on, I was on the front row so I had a good look

                          • I believe he is using his old cue which is a JP Classic that was lengthened by Peter Hanley - possibly hence the no-badge.
Supposedly Neil got a JPU last September but he went back to the Classic.
