You know, I did spot it...it was barely in view, but you could see Ronnie doing some back and forth with his cue...or something like that. And the snickers from the crowd made me more aware of it...what a character

If he wins he still might do what he did this year and come back to defend it again. Personally I'm disappointed if these interviews are accurate, but I'm not surprised.

      • the sad thing is he said he wants to win the WC in his 40s

why did he make the statement if he doesnt want to come next year

        • Has he really threatened to retire again? Or is that just rumours?

          • Sjeez...I don't believe what I just read (assuming it is indeed what ROS has said).

            1. How can he be in need of money with his millions in price money earnings over the years???
            2. Why does he feel the need to talk (so candidly) to the press...why not just say hello, how are you...goodbye He keeps getting himself in a bind.
            3. Why open up in such a earnest manner and tell the world you only participated in the Worlds Championship because of the need for quick cash...it is demeaning to yourself and also to the other players, as well as snooker in general. It's like he is saying...snooker doesn't mean sh*t and there's only one reason why I am here....which basically is what he said.

I really am struggling to have sympathy for this guy! I know all about depression and how hard it is to live with, which is the only reason why I still have some respect for Ronnie, but damn he is not making it easy for me!

Edit : oh and btw to get this straight...I'm not going to loose any sleep over this See all of you tomorrow afternoon....

Master of publicity...Ronnie knows how to provoke reactions & divide opinions As much as he makes out he doesn't care, I'm sure deep down he really does

              • obviously he does care, why else say he will be trying like crazy to win!

surely he can get money from endorsements, tv, and exhibitions so why take someone else's hard earned place to turn up for cash instead of the grandest prize in snooker?

                • He's just attention seeking again if you ask me. Granted he probably will leave again after this tournament.

I'm not sure he is. I truly believe that his natural ability and sheer talent for the game is half his problem. He's like one of these super intelligent kids, stuck in a classroom with other kids who are way below him. He gets bored and restless because he knows no one can match up to him. Ronnie O'Sullivan has never been outplayed. If he loses, it's because he loses interest and doesn't bother trying.

And these are not the stupid words of a fanboy. In actual fact I've grown quite bored of him and don't think snooker particularly missed him while he was away.

"Kryten, isn't it round about this time of year that your head goes back to the lab for retuning?"

                    • I think one thing is obvious. Ronnie doesn't need the money. And even if he did, he needn't turn up to The Crucible to get it. Who is to say he'd get past the first round? He could get paid money to turn up to Snooker Legends events, and there must be money out there for him to appear in advertisements, make appearances etc...

That's not to say Ronnie didn't say it. Maybe it was Ronnie's idea of a joke. Or Ronnie just being his usual self, and spouting out whatever comes into his head without verbalising it properly.

I wouldn't be surprised if he says tomorrow that he wasn't really serious, or comes out with some excuse.

                      • unless he's superstitious cos he said it at at the same stage last year!

Also about money, didn't barry hearn say he could get attendance money from sponsors a while back??

2006 Masters final against John Higgins - he played brilliantly but was outplayed. John Higgins has outplayed him a good few times. He, Stephen Hendry and Mark Williams were all capable of beating Ronnie when he was on top form back in the day.

Today it might be a different matter - maybe Trump really is the only one who's in with a chance against him. But to say he's never been outplayed?? That's sort of misremembering quite a lot of games.

That's such rubbish. I've often seen O'Sullivan lose in situations where he thinks he's won and starts to play careless and gets increasingly frustrated because of it. He has had a clear temperament issue at times which is a lot more than him 'not trying'.

                              • Whatever anyone says, it will not be great for the sport if he wins the world title, stops playing for a year, comes back, plays out of his skin at times, wins the world title again, and then stops. There will inevitably be speculation that he'll come back for the 2014 world title, and everyone will know that the game is operating without, definitively, the best player in the world. And if he keeps his head on for two more matches, he will win it.
