  • Snooker Plus

    Hello.
I want to know everything about snooker plus. Apart from what I've found on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snooker_plus my searches came empty.
What is the highest break? Who made it? How many matches ever took place?
A list with all the centuries...
Any statistical or historical information is good.

    Hi, mircea22

I will try to explain. This game was only a Joe Davis project, and he played Snooker+ only a coople of exibitions and the practice matches. There were no official tournaments, or break lists in this type of snooker. May be Chris Turner has fixed anything about the breaks... but the probability is low imho.

Considering the purple's spot, a maximum break looks far from possible, but it would be an interesting variant if it existed, for sure..

There was at least one Snooker-Plus tournament, sponsored by the News of the World which involved Joe Davis, Fred Davis and John Pulman, and commenced at Burroughes Hall on 26th October 1959. This was won by Davis but the highest break was by John Pulman with 112 (missing an easy yellow on the colours with 157 looking likely). A report of this tournament says that the Purple played only a minor part, with the Orange being the more popular of the extra balls.

In 1961 there is a reference to Jack Rea holding the highest break at the game with 156. It's not mentioned when or where this was made, and with no further references I can't say if it was every bettered.

I see from that article that one reason given for a lack of popularity was that nobody made orange or purple balls. You could get round that easily enough by putting a couple of pool balls on those spots couldn't you?

One thing to remember is that in those old days snooker was a tiny and dying sport. You could get a full size table free if you would collect it. Many of them just got junked. It was the introduction of colour TV that made it so phenomenally popular a few years back.

Just makes you see that these things go around in circles I suppose. We certainly need something to help the game again just now. Maybe a soap opera based around the scottish snooker debacle? Suggestions please.

Interesting that Snooker Plus was 50 years old last week. I will dust off my orange and purple balls and take them to the club tonight for an honorary game!

i think it should be revived and an event organised. if six reds gets it own event, why not snooker plus. ive always wanted to play it as well but dont know where to get the orange and purple balls. i aint got any spare balls to substitute as well

I'm not even dreaming about a DVD... I will be very happy to see at least one frame of snooker plus. Of course, it will be very nice to be from a match played by Joe Davis.

You're right! In my opinion it will be almost impossible to score a 210 (221, with freeball) due to the position of the purple ball.
